UNITED STATES BENJAMIN J. I-IILLMAN,
PAT NT OFFICE.
on VICTOR, COLORADO.
COMBINATION-TOOL.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No; 606,547, dated June 28, 1898.
Application filed June 29, 1896.
To (0% whom it may concern: Be it known that I, BENJAMIN J. HILLMAN, a citizen of. the United States, and a resident of Victor, in the county of El Paso and State of Colorado, have in vented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combination-Tool; and I do herebydeclare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to combination-tools.
My object is to provide a combination-tool which will be adapted for use as a wire twister and cutter.
Having this object in view-my invention consists of asimple, cheap, and durable-combination-tool comprising a wire cutter and twister of novel and improved construction, as will appearv more fully hereinafter.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of my improved tool, showing the auxiliary handle opened. Fig. 2 is a detail bottom plan View showing the construction of the working face of the anvil; Fig. 3, a detail side elevation of the combination wire twister andcutter. Fig. 4 is a detail bottom perspective view. 1 r
The handle A is formed with a flat face 1 upon one. side 'and. ,with an anvil 2 at a point near its forward end opposite the flat side 1, the same being formed by an enlargement of the handle, as clearly shown. The rear end of the anvilis cut away upon one side, as shown at 3, forming an inclined knife 4:, in the rear of which is aslot 5,which extends through the handle. The anvil 2 is integral with the handle A, and the cut-away portion 3 extends from one side of the handle to a point adjacent to the opposite side of the slot 5, so that the cutting edge of the knife 4 lies in line with one side of the slot 5.
'The lower end of the handle is cut off smoothly, as at 6, and O designates a bolt, comprising a screw-threaded shank 7, which is adj ustably received in the end of the handle, anda head 8. The end of the handle forms the stationary jaw and the head of the bolt the sliding jaw of an adjustable wrench. It will be observed that the flat side of the Serial No. 597,317. .(No model.)
handle-is recessed at 9 and immediately adjacent to the end of the shank of the screwthreaded bolt.
D represents an auxiliary handle provided with a screw 10 at a point near its rear end, having a laterally-bent lower end 10, forming a hook which is adapted to be turned so that it will fit within the laterally-extending recess 10" in thehandle A when it is desired to lock the main handle A and the auxiliary handle D together. The looking or unlocking of the two parts may be easily effected by turning the screw 10 in one direction or the ;other. This auxiliary han die is of such crosssectional shape and size that together with the main handle it forms a. complete handle. The upper end of the auxiliary handle is bent into an arm 11, which passes through the slot in the main handle and is pivoted on a pin 12, and a jaw 13, which is adapted to abut on the anvil of the main handle when the toolhandles are together. The edge 14: of the arm constitutes the knife or blade, which is adapted to act in connection with a cuttingblade on the main handle and the wire-cutter, while the jaw and anvil are adapted to receive a Wire or wires, so that when the auxiliary and main handles are properly grasped the wire or wires are properly held and the tool can be used as awire-twister. The edge 14 of the arm 11 fits, when the device is in position for cutting wire, within the cut-away portion 3, sothat it may act in conjunction with the knife 4; at one side thereof to produc a shearing out upon the wire.
The manner of using my device as a hammer, nail-extractor, or wrench will be readily understood from the foregoing description. In using the same as a wire-twister the auxiliary handle D is separated from the main handle A, as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings, and the wire to be twisted inserted between the lower side of the anvil 2 and the jaw 13. The handle D is then closed down upon the handle A and a gripping action upon the wire between the jaw 13 and said handle is effected, and the same may be twisted in the usual manner. Then it is desired to cut the wire, the same is placed between the knife 4 on the handle and the cutting edge 14 of the arm 11. The two handles are then compressed and a shearing out upon the wire is eifected.
My invention is extremely cheap, simple, and strong, and embodying as it does the tools heretofore mentioned it constitutes a Very useful device.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A tool, comprising a main handle having a slot therein and an anvil thereon adjacent to said slot, the rear end of said anvil being cut away upon one side forming an inclined cutting blade or knife, and an auxiliary handle pivoted to the main handle and extending through said slot, said auxiliary handle being bent into a jaw adapted to act in connec- -tion with the anvil to provide a wire-twister,
the bent portion thereof having a cutting edge adapted to fit within the cut-away portion at
