Description

To all whmp if, may concern tix-litri l ,State/e' mit" @ffm/p. e
fnnovnn roLDmrABLn.
meommemneammmasmrs Patmanamnupnennenme- Be it known that 1, J MEs'W. SMITH, of Charles-A `town,it1 the county of li/Iddlesex, and State 0f Massaf -ohusetts, have invented an Improved Table; and I'do hereby declare that the following, taken in connection with the drawings, which'accoinpany and form part of this speciication, is a descriptionof my invention suf'-v ticient to enable thgse skilled in to art to practiscit "M'yinve'ntion relates to the construction 'of tables `for dining-rooms, kitchens, laundries, and other places,
with reference to provision for folding such a table, so that it may bestood up at the side of a room, and may be more safely transported or packed away.
My-invention consists in combining with a cross-l le'gged frame, (the two adjacent legs of which, at each end of the table, are hung and turn upon a pivot,) a table-top, made in two part, hinged together and to the legs, the two parts of thetable-,tpp folding together `over the leg-frame, asthe legs arfolded, and assuming a horizontal position, as 'the legs, are spread. It is in this construction that my invention consists.
The drawings representa" table embodying my improvement. p
A shows a cross-section of the open table.
B, an end view of the table folded up.
O, aside view ofthe table'.'
a and b denote the two legs at each end of the table,
pivoted together, at the centre, by a pin, c, and connectedto'the corresponding legs at the opposite end of the table, bythe cross-bars d.
` The legs oi' each pair turn freely on the pin c, so that I each two legs pivoted together, open, as seen at A, or lclose together, as seen at B.
To the ,top of each two legs, ce c or b b, connected, by the bars d, is hinged a top-piece, or 1eaf,'e, or j, as seenat i, and the twoioieces e .f are hinged together, as seen atg.
When the legsare s read open, the leaves, or pieces j c f are brought into l1, orizontal position, the adjacent edges 'of the two leaves butting, as seen at A.
When the parts are in this position, they are held relatively stationary, by hooks h, hung from the hinges g, and hooking into eyes k, at the junction of the legs, or by other suitable devices, and the tops of the two parts ef thus constitute a dat and igigid table-surface.
l. To fold the table, the hooks are released, and the leaves e f are brought down into vertical position, the
legs and leaves assuming the position shown at B, in which position of parts the table may be packed for transport-ation, so as to be preserved from injury, or
may be stood up at the side of aroom, or in a closet, where space has to be economized in dwelling-houses. Theinvention is applicable to tables used for multifarious purposes, and tables embodying this improvement can be very strongly as well as cheaply made'.
I claim the combination with the cross-legs a b,
jointed together, of the leaves ke f, jointed together and to the legs a b, and a fastening-device, substantially as shown and described.
Witnesses: JAMES Wf SMITH.
