ERNEST BAUMAN, JR., OF VASECA, MINNESOTA.
EXTENSION-TABLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 584,537, dated June 15, 1897.
Application filed January 25, 1897. Serial No. 620,556. (No model.) i
T0 all whom, it 11a/ty con/cern:
Be it known that I, ERNEST BAUMAN, Jr., a citizen of the United States, residing at Vaseca, in the county of Vaseca and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Extension-Tables; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to extension-tables of that type wherein are employed a plurality of sections hinged together and to one of the table-sections and adapted to fold into a re ceptacle when not in use and when extended to constitute a smooth unbroken top.
My object is to provide a device of the class described which will be of cheap and improved construction and adapted to be extended or contracted with facility. f
The invention consists of certain improved features and novel combinations of parts, more fully set forth in the following description, and which are recited in the appended claims.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my table in its contracted form. Fig. 2 is a side view of the table extended. Fig. 3 is a top plan viewof the subject-matter of Fig. 2, showing the end leaves turned back. Fig. t is a top plan view of the subject-matter of Fig. 1, showing the end leaves turned back. Fig. 5 is a bottom plan view of the table contracted. Fig. Gis a similar view of the table extended. Fig. 7 is a detailed view of one of the folding extensionleaf supports. Fig. S is a detailed view of one of the extension-leaf hinges.
Referring to the numerals on the drawings, l and 2 indicate end sections, consisting, respectively, of two transverse supportingbeams 2 and 3, set edgewise and connected by two U-shaped frame-braces 4, to which are screwed or otherwise secured a pair of legs 5, connected by a leg-frame 6.
7 7 indicate a pair of extension-leaf brackets extending transversely in respect to the table between the beams 2 and 3 of the end sections and guided by guide-rods 8, extending between the beams 2 and 3 and designed to engage suitable eyelets 9, carried by the brackets 7.
10 indicates the central section of the table, which preferably consists of a comparatively broad center leaf 1l, supported by a transverse center beam 12, supported upon a pair of straight center legs 13.
14 indicates a number of extension-leaves hinged to each other and to the opposite sides of the center leaf 11 and the upper edge of the extension-leaf brackets 7.
15 15 indicate a number of folding extension-leaf supports, composed, respectively, of a plurality of pivoted sections 16, pivotally connected with each other and at the opposite extremities of the supports to the adjacent sides of the beams 3 and the center beam 12.
17 17 indicate end leaves hinged to the upper edges of the beams 2, anddesigned when folded down to the position indicated in Fig. 1 to have their fiat edges supported upon the extension-leaf brackets 7. n
The manipulation of my device is as follows: Supposing the table to be extended, as indicated in Fig. 2, it will be observed that the end and center leaves and likewise the several extension-leaves will be in the same horizontal plane and will lie smoothly against each other, constituting a flat table-top. If now it is desired to contract the table, the end leaves 17 are slightly elevated and the end sections are forced toward the center section, when, as will be evident, the extensionleaf brackets 7 will slide upon the guide-rods 8 toward the end beams 2, which will cause the extension-leaves to drop between the said brackets and the beams 3. The extensionleaf supports 15 being folded by the approach of the beams 3 toward the center beam 12, the device will now have assumed the position indicated in Fig. 4, and the end leaves will be folded to the position indicated in Fig. l, having their flat edges supported upon the extensiondeaves nearest the beam 3.
In order that the joints between the extension-leaves may be close and smooth, I prefer to hinge them together by means of a slidling hinge 1S, (illustrated in Fig. 8,) one set of screw-holes in which being somewhat elongated to permit slight movement of the leaves IOO and to permit them to lie flat upon the eXtension-leaf supports, and the end sections may be provided with end pieces, as illustrated, upon which the extremities of the end leaves lie when folded.
I do not desire to limit myself to the details of construction herein shown and described, but reserve the right to change, modify, or vary such details within the scope of my in- Vention.
- Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. In an extension-table, the combination With end sections having extension-leaf receptacles, of a center section, guide-rods in the receptacles, upright transversely-extending extension-leaf brackets having eyes slidable on the guide-rods, extension-leaves hinged to the aforesaid brackets and hinged together and also hinged to the center section, said extension-leaves being located in the receptacles, and extension supports comprising braces hinged together and to the end sections and adapted for reception under the eXtension-leaves when the latter are extended.
2. In an extension-table the combination with end sections consisting respectively of transverse beams, U shaped frame-braces intermediate the beams, guide-rods likewise intermediate of said beams, legs secured to the U-shaped frames, and a hinged leaf carried by one of the transverse beams of each end section, of a center section extension -leaf brackets movable upon the guide-rods, extension-leaves intermediate the extension-leaf brackets and the center section, and folding extension-leaf supports intermediate the end sections and the center section, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification inthe presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ERNEST BAUMAN, JR.
