EDWARD LOGKYER, OF MCKEESPORT, PENNSYLVANIA.
WRENCH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 19, 1908.
Application filed August 28, 1907. Serial No. 890,424.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD LOOKYER, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at McKeesport, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements inWrenches, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to wrenches, and its object is, to provide a device of this character, capable of being readily adjusted, and which may be employed as a hammer.
The improvement consists of the combination with a shank provided with a fixed jaw, of a movable jaw slidably supported upon the shank, and means for locking said movable jaw to prevent its movement when the Wrench is to be used.
The construction of the improvement will be fully described hereinafter, in connection with the accompanying drawing, which forms a part of this specification, and its novel features will be set forth in the appended claims.
In the drawing, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a wrench embodying the invention, Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the same, Fig. 3 is a rear elevation of the im roved wrench, Fig. 4 is a side elevation part y broken away, and Fig. 5 is a section on the line 0cac of Fig. 1.
The reference numeral 1 designates the shank of the wrench provided with teeth 2, and a fixed jaw 3. Slidably supported upon the shank 1 is a movable jaw 4, provided with a loop 5 embracing the shank. The jaw 4 is longitudinally recessed to receive a toothed dog 7, to the opposite sides of which are secured parallel arms 8 by means of pins 9.
- The dog 7 is connected to the movable jaw 4 by a cross pin 10, extending through an elongated slot 11 formed in the dog 7. A pin 12 connects therear ends of the arms 8, andupon said pin is mounted an eccentric 13 having a depending arm or lever 14, to which is pivotally secured a latch 15, rounded at its free end to adapt it to engage a notch 16 formed in one of the arms 8.
The utility and operation of the device constructed as thus described, will be readily understood. When the dog 7 of the movable jaw 4 is released from its engagement with the toothed shank 1 by turning the arm 14 to the position shown in Fig. 4, said jaw 4 may be readily adjusted with relation to the fixed jaw 3, after which said movable jaw is locked in its adjusted position by turning the eccentric to the position shown in Fig. 1.
When it is desired to use the wrench as a hammer, without looseningthe jaw 4, the latch 15 is turned u on its pivot to engage the notch 16. Thes 0t 11 in the locking dog permits of the required movement of said dog, and the parallel arms 8 secured thereto. When the wrench is in action the lower aw thereof is not tight to the shank but works rather loosely to give itself relief from the work.
I will have it understood that the invention includes all such modifications and variations in the details of construction as may fall within the terms and scope of the following claims.
Having now described my invention what I claim as new, is
A wrench comprising a toothed shank provided with a fixed jaw, a 'aw slidably supported on said shank and longitudinally recessed, a toothed dog, arranged within the recess of the sliding aw and loosely connected to said sliding jaw, parallel arms secured at their forward ends to opposite sides of said dog and connected at their rear ends by a cross pin, an eccentric mounted on said cross pin and provided with an arm or lever, and means for locking the eccentric arm, consisting of a latch pivotally connected to said arm and adapted to engage a notch in one of said parallel arms.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
EDWARD LOCKYER.
