OTEY R. KIRKPATRICK, OF FORT WORTH, TEXAS.
WRENCH.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Oct, 26, 1920.
Application filed December 16, 1919. Serial N0. 345,810. H
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OTEY R. KIRKPATRICK, a citizen of the UnitedStates of America, residing at Fort lVorth, in the county of Tarrant and State of Texas,,have invented certain new and useful Improvements in lVrenches, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to wrenches and particularly to wrenches which can. be used both as pipe wrenches and wrenches for general purposes,- and the object is to provide a wrench which can be instantly adjusted and which can be quickly adjusted by the same hand which is using the wrench, and another object is to provide a wrench which is both readily adjustable and which has the requisite strength for any ordinary work.
()ther objects and advantages will be fully explained in the following description and the invention will be more particularly toothed jaw 3 integral therewith. The
wrench has an adjustable jaw member 1 provided with a toothed jaw 5 integral therewith. A yoke 6 is attached to themember 1 by a rivet 7 and engages the member 1 loosely and holds the members 1 and 1 in their relative positions. The members 1 and 2 are locked and attached together by means of interlocking parts. The member 2', has a I cavity 8 extending entirely therethrough transversely and has an opening 9 in the end thereof. The member 1 has a reduced member 10 forming a shank for inserting in the cavity 9 and the shank 10 has a spring seat 11. The shank 10 is secured in the cavity 9.by a rivet 12. v entirely through the member 2 and shank 10 and also through both sides of a yoke 18 and so secures the yoke and. the two members 1 projected. The rivet 12 extends and 2 together. The yoke 13 engages the member 4: loosely and: serves to hold the member 4 in its position relative to the members 1 and 2. The member 4: is provided with teeth 11 whichhave each one flat face at right angles to the member 1. The movable member 1 is locked to the power member', composed of parts 1 and 2, by a plunger lock 15 which moves at right angles to the member 4. The lock 15 is held in engagement with the movable member 4c by a spiral spring 16 which is mounted-in the cavity 8 and bears against the seat 11. The lock 15 may be released from the member 4 by lugs 17 which are rigid therewith and project through slots 18 in the member 2. The lugs 17 are so positioned that they can be actuated by a thumb of the hand which is using the wrench. responding to the teeth 16 of member 4. The lock'15 is not supported on a lever or a pivot bolt, but when strain comes on the member, the lock is heldin place by the walls of the cavity 8 in the member 2. The
member 4: will be immovable when the lock 15 is engaging this member. The spring 16 normally holds the lock in engagement with the member 1, but is readily released there- The lock 15 has teeth corfrom by a pressure on the release lugs 17 i or either one of them. I The member composed of parts 1 and 2 will have the necessary power by reason of the interlocking of these members and the yokes 6 and 13. The
hat I claim is 1- Awrench of the type described comprising a handle shank, an outer jaw having a relatively short inner shank pivotally mounted at its innerend to the outer end of the handle shank, an innerjaw having a toothed shank slidablyassociated with the outer jaw and handle shanks, a transversely sliding rack catch carriedby the handle shank for engagement with the teeth of the inner aw shank, and.- a sprlng interposed between the rack catch andthe inner end of v the outer jaw shank to'hold the rack catch In testimony whereof, Iset my hand, this tenth day of December, A. D. 1919.
lorEY'R. KIRKPATRICK.
