Description

@gat/fit- ASA L. CARRIER, OF WASHINGTON, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA Letters .Patent No. 88,608, dated Apr/Z 6, 1869.
TOY-PISTOL.
n The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, Asn L. CARRIER, of the city and county of Washington, in the District of Columbia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in the Mode of Construct-inw Toy-Guns, or Pistols;
and the following is a full, elet-ar, and exact description of the saine, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of' this specification, in which- Figure 1 represents a side view of' a toy-pistol complete, with `a ball, or projectile in place, ready to 'be thrown.
Figure 2 shows a longitudinal section through the same, in which the Indiafrubbcr spring, and all of the parts, are seen in position.
The object of my invention is to furnish a cheap toygun, or pistol, for the amusement of juveniles, which will be harmless, the projectiles being such as not to endanger the eyes or countenance of one another, should they get hit in the face, as is the case with those in which sticks and pebble-stones can be used for projectiles.
My invention consists in making, or casting the gun, or pistol in two pieces, and securing them together, and also the trigger in its place, with elastic bands, so that no drilling, riveting, or machine-work, is required in the manufacture of the article.
To enable others to make and use my invention, I will describe it more fully, referring to the drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The handle and breech A, and the barrel B, are cast together, from\two patterns, right and left.
The hollow, b, for the spring C, and the longitudinal groove a a, which forms the slit for the sliding block D to work in, are all formed; as also the pin, or projection f, to hold the spring C, which 1s attached to one side, near the forward end. l
The block D and trigger E are also cast, making, in all, only four easily cast pieces of metal, ready tolbe put together as soon as they are cleaned, there being groot-'es c d e, or recesses, cast in the handle, breech, and barrel, in which to place elastic-rubber hands g h t, to hold the whole together; the band It, holding the trigger in its place, also answering the purpose of the spring, to hold the catch j in the notch k, inthe under side ofthe sliding block D, when the pistol 1s cocked.
The ball projectiles F 'may be made of any kind of wood, with a smooth hole through their centre, of sufticient size to slide easily on the barrel B, and the torce with which they are thrown will be in proportion to the strength of the spring C, in the cavity of the barrel.
The advantages of my invention are, that no 1nachine-work is required in the construction. After thc castings are made, they can be put together, all coinplete, without skilled labor, by boys or girls, and they will be safe from producing any serious dam-ngc to any one.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The mode of constructing toy-guns, or pistols, of cast-metal, or other suitable nmtnrial, by securing all ot' the parts together, by elastic-rubber hands, substantially in the manner herein described.
ASA L. CARRIER.
