MINERS LAMP.
To all whom it may concern:
v Be it known that I, CHARLES MURRAY, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Trevorton, v in the county of Northumberland and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Im rovernents in Miners Lamps, of which the 'ollowing is a specification.
My invention relates to miners lamps, and its primary object is to provide a lamp of this character with means' by which the amount of air fed to the oil reservoir may be regulated to compensate for poorly fitting wicks and the tendency of the oil to feed too rapidly on the miners entering an air passage.
A further object of my invention is to provide a miners lamp wherein the closure of the reservoir is provided with the air regulating means, and to provide a closure which may be sold separately for application to lamps already in use.
A still further object of my invention is to provide a device of the above stated character which is simple of construction, and which may be manufactured and sold at a comparatively low cost.
With the above andlother objects in view, the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a miners lamp constructed in accordance with my invention, and Fig. 2 is a vertical central sectional view thereof.
Referring to the drawing by reference numerals, 2 designates the oil reservoir provided with a filling opening 3, 4 the wick tube and 5 the supporting hook of a miners lamp of the usual construction.
6 designates top plate of the closure for the opening 3 of the oil reservoir, said closure being hingedly secured to the reservoir by means of the element 7. The top late of the closure is provided with a latera ly flaring annular fiange 8, the lower edge of which is adapted to frictionally engage the Wall of the opening 3 to secure the closure in a plied position a ainst accidental opening, and with a vertical y rising tubular member 9, which provides a passage 9a which communicates directly with the reservoir 2. The lower end of the member 9 is connected with the flange 8 by means of a Wall 10, and the upper end thereof is provided with an enlarged screw Specification of Letters Patent.

threaded head 11. The wall 10 inclines downwardly and laterally and is provided to reinforce the flange 8 and the member 9. A valve ca 12 has threaded engagement with the hea 11, whereby the same may be adjusted to regulate the amount of air entering the reservoir 2. The lower end of the valve cap 12 is bent inwardly to provide an annular shoulder 13 adapted to engage the under side of the head 1 1 to limit the opening movement of the valve cap. The upper closed end of the valve cap 12 is provided with openings 14, which are arranged concentric to the passage 9, whereby the valve cap may be adjusted to partially or fully close the air passage 9a.
It is the practice among miners to manufacture wicks for their lamps out of cotton, and a great many times the wicks are so defective that the oil either feeds too freely or not freely enough. When a miner enters an air passage the oil feeds too freely, and drops from the wick tube. It should be apparent that these serious objections may be overcome by adjusting the valve cap 12 to regulate the amount of air fed to the oil reservoir.
Changes in the form, proportions and minor details of construction may be made within the scope of the claims without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
Having fully described and illustrated my invention, what I claim as new is:
The combination with a miners lam including a reservoir provided with a ling opening, of a closure for the filling opening, said closure consisting of a top late provided with a 'laterally flaring annu ar Range, the lower edge of which is adapted to frictionally engage the inner wall of the filling opening, a tubular member carried by an( projecting above and below the top plate, the passage of the tubular member communicating directly with the reservoir, a downwardly and laterally inclined plate secured to the lower end of the tubular member and to the Range, said plate reinforcing the member and the flange, and a valve cap mounted on the tubular member.
