PATENT OFFICE.
BASIL F. CHESHIRE, OF ST. JOSEPH, MISSOURI.
-WlCK-ADJUSTER FOR LAMPS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 738,984, dated September 15, 1903.
Application filed March 2, 1903. Serial No- 145,852. (No model.)
I0 all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, BASIL F. CHESHIRE, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Joseph, in the county of Buchanan and State of Missouri, have invented new and useful Improvements in WVick-Adj usters for Lamps, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a wick raising and lowering device adapted for tubular Wicks of Argand burners as employed in kerosenelamps.
The object of my invention is to provide a convenient means for raising and lowering the wick by rotation of a ring or collar surrounding a portion of the burner without moving the chimney-holder or the shell of the burner.
Referring now to the drawings, Figure 1 is a central vertical section of a lamp-burner provided with my improved wick-adjuster, the inner wick-tube and the body of the lamp being broken away. Fig. 2 is a sectional plan view of my invention, the lamp-body being omitted. The section-line of Fig. 2 corresponds to line a b of Fig. 1, and the sectionline of Fig. 1 corresponds to line cc of Fig. 2.
1 designates the upper portion of a lampbody.
2 is the burner-shell, or the lower portion thereof, which is inserted tightly or non-rotatably within the neck of the lamp-body.
3 is the outer wick-tube, to which the chimney-holder 4 is rigidly secured.
5 is the inner wick-tube.
The upper edge of the shell 2 has an annular crimp 6 formed therein, by which a groove is formed just inside of the periphery of the shell. Resting in said groove is the bottom of an internally-threaded ring 7. Secured to said ring are a plurality of finger-pieces 8, by means of which said ring may easily be rotated in either direction.
Three pairs of cars 9 are struck out from the outer wicktube at the same height as that of the threaded ring 7, and mounted rotatably between each pair of ears 9 is a serrated Wick-wheel 12. The teeth of these wheels are sunk into the wick 13 in the usual manner, and said Wheels are engaged by the screwthreads of the ring 7, as shown.
The lower edge of the chimney-holder 4 is flanged downwardly, as at 14:, and said flange overlaps the upper edge of the threaded ring The wick is raised or lowered by turning the ring 7 in one direction or the other.
I am aware that wick-raisers have been patented in which it is necessary to rotate the chimney-holder or the burner-shell in order to adjustthe wick, and such construction I do not claim as new.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Lettors Patent of the United States, is-
1. A wick-adjuster for tubular wicks, comprising a non-rotatable outer Wick-tube having a plurality of pairs of outwardly-projecting ears, a serrated wickwheel mounted between. each pair of said ears,a chimney-holder secured to the outer wick-tube, and an internally-threaded ring engaging the wick-wheels and rotatable independently of the chimneyholder and of the burner-shell, substantially as described.
2. In a wick-adjuster for tubular Wicks, the
combination with a burner-shell, of an outer Wick-tube secured therein, a plurality of pairs of ears projecting outwardly from the outer wick-tube, a serrated wick-wheel mounted between each pair of said ears, an internallythreaded ring engaging said Wheels andsupported by the upper edge of said shell, and a chimney-holder secured to the outer Wicktube and having a depending peripheral flange overlapping the upper edge of said ring, substantially as described.
3. A wick-adj uster for tubular wicks, comprising a burner-shell having an annular groove within its upper edge, an internallythreaded ring seated within said groove, an outer wick-tube having a plurality of pairs of outwardly-projecting ears, a serrated wickwheel mounted between each pair of said ears, said wheels being engaged by the threads of said ring, and a non-rotatable chimney-holder provided with a depending peripheral flange which embraces the upper edge-of said ring, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
BASIL F. CHESHIRE. Witnesses:
