To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN LEWIS LAM- BOLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fort Vayne, in the county of Allen and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Printing Attachment for Paper- Roll Holders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to printing means to be employed in connection with rolls of wrapping paper for the purpose of printing advertisements, announcements, and the like on such paper when it is drawn from the roll.
The primary object of the present invention is to provide novel, simple and effective means of this character that can be readily attached-to a roll holder, will print the desired matter clearly upon the paper, and will blot or dry the ink immediately after printing in order to avoid the smearing of the printed matter when the paper is wrapped upon a bundle or package.
The preferred embodiment of the invention is disclosed in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a perspective view of a paper roll holder and paper roll therein showing the improved attachment applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view on the enlarged scale through the mechanism. Fig. 3 is a view in elevation of the under side of the attachment. Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of the clamping means.
Similar'reference numerals designate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawings.
The roll-holder, designated as a whole by the reference numeral 5, may be of any well known character, and in the embodiment illustrated, includes a top cross bar 6, to
which the attachment is secured.
The usual roll of paper is shown at 7.
The printing mechanism comprises a casing 8 having its under side open, and rotatably mounted therein is a printing member comprising end walls 9 mounted on a shaft 10 and journaled in the end walls of the casing. Connecting the end walls are a series of channel bars 1 1 constituting holders for rubber or other suitable type 12. Inasmuch as a series of these holders are employed, it will be evident that practically any advertisement or announcement may be set up as de-- sired. A permanent announcement or advertisement as 13, may also form a art of Arranged Wit 'n the casing at one side of the member are spaced swinging arms 14:, and j ournaled thereon, are inking rollers 15 that are in contact, one of the inking rollers operating against the printingl face as the printing member rotates, the ot er constituting a distributer. Springs 16, bearing against the arms, serve to hold the rollers in operative relation to the printing member.
The casing 8 is carried by swinging arms 17 pivotally mounted in the ends of a bar 18, constituting a part of the meansfor securing the device to the roll holder. Spring arms 19, secured to the bar, bear against the arm 17, and serve to urge the casing downwardly and inwardly. The clamping means consists of a pair of hooks 20 arranged. to embrace the cross bar 6 of the roll holder, said hooks having arms 21 that are angularly disposed and slidably passed through the bar 18. Set screws 22 serve to hold these arms against movement and in adjusted position. It will thus be evident that if the parts are clamped to the roll holder as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the casing with its printing member will be urged by the spring arms 19 towards the roll 7.
The following means is preferably employed-for effecting the rotation of the printing member. Roller engaging wheels 23 are journaled on the opposite end walls of the casing and rest against the face of the paper roll, said wheels preferably having roughened peripheries. One of the wheels has a shaft 24 projecting into the casing and having a pinion 25 thereon. This pinion meshes with another inion' 26 that is in turn in mesh with a gear w eel 27 fixed to the adjacent end of the printing mechanism. The wheels 23 have the portions which engage the paper roll disposed nearer the shaft 10 or axis of rotation of the printing member than the printing face of said member. Consequently it will be evident that while the printing member is located within the casing, the wheels 23 will bear against the paper roll but when said printing member has been revolved through the medium of the intermeshing gears so that the printing face comes into contact with the face of the paper roll, then the casing will be raised so as to carry the wheels 23 away from the paper roll and the printing face will be held in contact with the face of the paper by the additional tension thus imparted by the springs 19. Directly in rear of the wheels 23 and the printing member is a roller 28 having a blotter 29 on its outer face, said roller being carried by spring arms 30 that serve to maintain it against the face of the paper.
The operation of the device is substantially as follows. As the roll of paper 7 is rotated by pulling the free end of the paper therefrom, it will be evident that the wheels 23, because of their frictional contact with such roll, will be rotated, and therefore the printing member will be rotated. Consequently if an advertisement, announcement or other display matter is set up or placed upon the printing member, the same will be brought into contact with and printed upon the paper, the blotter 29 absorbing and drying the print so as to avoid its becoming smeared from handling afterwards. It will be evident that this structure is very simple, that any desired announcement or advertisement matter may be displayed, ahd that the same will be printed consecutively, the speed of rotation of the printing member being varied by changing the gearing. The device is readily applicable to any ordinary paper roll holder, inasmuch as it only requires the clam ing of the hooks upon the frame of such he der.
From the foregoing, it is thought that the construction, operation, and many advantages of the herein described invention will be apparent to those skilled in they art, without further description, and it will be understood that various changes in the size, shape, proportion, and minor details of construction, may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as'new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a device of the character described, the combination with a supporting frame, of means for mounting the same on a paper roll holder, a printing member having a shaft mounted in the supporting frame, said member being rotatable around said shaft concentrically thereto, a driving wheel jour-- naled in the frame at one side of the shaft, and gearing connecting the wheel and printing member for transmitting motion from the former to the latter.
2. In a device of the character described, the combination with a movable support, and means for mounting it on a paper roll holder, of a revoluble printing member mounted thereon, and roll-engaging means separately mounted on the support and connected to the member for rotating it, the roll-engaging portion of saidmeans being located nearer the axis of rotation of the printing member than the printing portion of said member.
3. In a device of the character described, the combination with a movable support, of means for movably mounting it on a paper roll holder, a revoluble printing member, and
roll-engaging means geared to the member for rotating the same, the roll-engaging portion of said means being located nearer the axis of rotation of the printing member than the printing face of said member.
4. In a device of the character described, the combination with a supporting frame, of means for movably mounting the same on a paper roll holder, a printing member journaled in the frame, a roll-engaging driving wheel journaled in the frame at one side of the printing member, and gearing between the driving wheel and the printing member for transmitting motion from the former to the latter.
5. In a device of the character described, the combination with a supporting casing, of means for mounting the same on a paper roll holder, a rotatable printing member journaled within the casing, and a roll-engaging driving wheel journaled outside the casing and having connections with the member for rotating it.'
6. In a device of the character described, the combination with a supporting casing, of means for pivotally mounting the same on a paper roll holder, a rotatable printing member journaled' within the casing, rollers journaled on the outside of the casing and bearing against the paper roll, and gearing connecting one of said rollers to the printing member.
7. In a device of the character described, the combination with a supporting frame, of means for mounting the same on a paper roll holder, a rotatable printing member journaled in the frame, and a paper roll engaging driving wheel journaled on the frame and connected to the printing member, the portion of said wheel that engages the roll being disposed nearer the axis of rotation of the printing member than the printing face of the member.
8. In a device of the character described,
casing and operating against the paper roll when the printing member is out of contact therewith, and gearing connecting one of the wheels and the printing member, said wheels having their paper engaging edges disposed nearer the axis of rotation of the printing ipember than the printing face of said mem- 9. In a device of the character described, the combination with a support, of means for pivotally mounting the same on a paper roll holder, a rotatable printing member journaled on the support and movable into and out of coaction with a roll placed in the holder, wheels rotatably mounted on the support and operating against the paper roll when the printing member is, out of contact therewith, and gearing connecting one of the wheels of the printing member for rotating the latter when the former is out of engagement with the paper roll.
10. In a device of the character described, the combination with a casing, of means for pivotally mounting the casing on a paper roll holder, a rotatable printing member journaled in the casing, roll engaging wheels journaled on the casing and bearing against the paper roll, gearing connecting one of said wheels and the printing member, swinging arms located within the casing, inking rollers carried by the swinging arms and cooperating with the printing member, a blotting roller disposed in rear of the printing member and operating against the paper roll, and
means for exerting a yielding tension against the blotting roll.
11. In a device of the character described, the combination with a bar, of printing means pivotally mounted on the bar, an-.
gularly disposed clamping hooks passing through the bar and relatively movable with JOHN LEWIS LAMBOLEY.
