ASSIGNORS TO SARGENT & COMPANY, OF NEW HAVEN, CONNECTICUT, A CORPORA- TION OF CONNECTICUT.
DOOR-PLATE AND HANDLE Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 3, 1907.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, ALBERT A. PAGE and JOHN H. SHAW, of the town of East Haven and city of New Haven, respectively, county of New Haven, and State of Connecticut, have invented new and useful Improvements in Door-Plates and Handles, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description when taken in connection with theaccompanying drawings, which form a part thereof, and in which Figure 1 represents a front elevation of a door plate and handle embodying the invention, Fig. 2, a reverse View of the same, Fig. 3, a side elevation of the same, Fig. 4, a central vertical-section of the same, Fig. 5, a rear detail View of the handle, Fig, 6, a rear detail view of one of the nuts, and Fig. 7, a rear detail view of the thumb piece support.
In all figures, similar letters of reference represent like parts.
This invention relates to door plates and handles, and has for its object a novel construction of a handle and its connection with the plate by which a sheet metal handle may be firmly secured to the plate, and a novel construction by which the support for the thumb piece projecting through the plate is held in position by the mechanism for securing the handle to the plate.
To these, among other ends, the invention consists of the various improvements and combinations of parts set forth and claimed hereinafter.
Referring to the drawings for a more particular description, the parts designated by the letter A represent a door plate or escutcheon, which may be of the usual form and design, and B the handle, which, as shown more particularly in Figs. l'and 5, is hollow and formed of sheet metal with its sides'turned in from the outer face to meet along a line C on the rear of the handle, so that a smooth outer surface is presented, and a rounded form is obtained which is convenient for gripping with the hand. he ends D of. the handle are, as shown in Figs. 4 and 5, circular and internally screw threaded. Cylindrical pieces E externally screw threaded are adapted to be screwed into the ends of the handle, and project through perforations F and F in the plate. shown screwed on to the cylindrical pieces E,
'known manner.
Washers G are and are adapted to fit between the ends of the handle and the outer face of the plate A. On the opposite side of the plate, nuts H are adapted to be screwed on to the pieces E, so that between the washers G and nuts H, the plate A is firmly gripped, and the handle thereby rigidly connected to the plate. The perforation F is slightly elongated to provide for any inaccuracy in the handle.
The thumb piece I is adapted to project through an opening K in the plate in well On the inside of the plate is a support L formed of a flat piece, with a circular perforation M, for the reception of one of the cylindrical pieces E. An upwardly extending prolongation N on the support is provided with an opening 0, adapted to correspond with. the opening K in the plate, and through the opening 0 the thumb piece I is adapted to project' The lateral edges of the projection N are turned at right angles as at P, to form bearings for a fulcrum pin R, adapted to project through the thumb piece and pivot it to the support L. By this means, the support for the thumb piece is held in place on the plate by means of the same screw or cylindrical piece E, which secures one end of the handle to the plate.
By this construction, a simple and efficient connection is obtained, easily assembled, and, therefore, readily repaired in case of injury to any of the parts.
Having now described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
The combination with the door or escutcheonplate, having perforations therein; of a hollow handle having its ends internally screw threaded; cylindrical pieces adapted to ,be screwed into said handle ends and project through said perforations; and washers and nuts adapted to be screwed on to said pieces and bear against opposite sides of said door or escutcheon plate, substantially as described.
In witness whereof, we have hereunto set our hands on the 8th day of March, 1906. ALBERT A. PAGE. JOHN H. SHAW. Witnesses:
IVILLIAM H. KIRSCHNER, KATHRYN M. WALPOLE.
