ITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LOUIS G. PECK AND FRED R. PEGK, OF BERLIN, WVISCONSIN.
DOOR-LATCH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 4, 1906.
Application filed September 2,1905. Serial No. 276,775.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, LOUIS C. PEGK and FRED R. PECK, citizens of the United States, residing at Berlin, county of Green Lake, and State of isconsin, have invented new and useful Improvements in Door-Latches, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to improvements in door-latches.
The objects of our invention are to provide a form of construction in which the parts may, if desired, be all stamped or struck up from sheet metal and in which the number of parts is reduced to a minimum, regard being also had to facility in assembling the parts, also to provide a form of construction in which the bolts for the actuating-handles are made to serve as a pivot and lifting-pin, respectively, for the latch and in which the operating-handles are located in recesses where they will not interfere with the movement of a sliding door.
In the following description reference is had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a side view of the invention as it appears applied to a door. Fig. 2 is a sec- :tFional view of the same, drawn on line a; 00 of Like parts are identified by the same reference characters in both views.
A is a door in the front edge of which a notch is cut for the reception of the dished plates B and C, the outwardly-projecting sides of which fit the walls of the notch in the door on three sides, and where the device is applied to barn-doors the margins are preferably turned outwardly on three sides to form flanges D, which facilitate attaching the plates to the woodwork of the door by screws E. Screws E may also be employed, if desired. The latch-bar F is connected with the plates by a pivot-pin f and is lifted by a pin f, which extends through slots Ginthe plates. The pins ff are each extended and connected to handles H, each of which comprises a bar provided with inwardly-extending end portions, whereby the central portion of the bar is offset from the plate in a position to be readily grasped and manipulated. The latchbar F is provided with an ordinary latch-head 1, adapted to engage a catch-plate J, connected with the door-jamb. It will be observed when in position are in close proximity to the latch-bar and serve as guides therefor.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination with a door having a notch in one edge, of a dished plate extending into said notch; a latch-bar and a handle connected with the plate by a common pivotpin; and another pin connecting the latchbar and handle and extending through a slot in the plate; said handle having inwardlyprojecting ends, whereby the central portion is held at a distance from the plate.
2. The combination with a door having 'a notch in one edge, of a set of dished plates extending into said notch from opposite sides; a latch-bar between the plates provided with a projecting latch-head; a pivot-pin connecting said latch-bar with the lates; another pin connected with the latchbar and extending through slots in the plates; and handles, located in the dished portions of the plates and supported by said pins.
3. The combination with a door having a notch in one side, of a setof dished plates extending into said notch from opposite sides; a latch-b ar between the plates, provided with a projecting latch-head; a pivot-pin connecting said latch-bar with the plates; another pin connected with the latch-bar and extendthrough slots in the plates; and handles located in the dished portions of the plates and supported by said pins; said handles being provided with inwardly-projecting end portions, whereby the central portions are held away from the plates.
4. The combination with a door having a notch in one edge, of a set of dished plates extending into said notch from opposite sides; a latch pivoted between the plates; handles pivoted to the exterior surfaces of the plates; and a latch-operating pin, connecting the handles and latch through slots in the plates.
In testimony whereof we aflix our signatures in the presence of two Witnesses.
LOUIS O. PECK. FRED R. PECK. IVitnesses:
