O F TAUNTON, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO HUGHES EYELET 1 COMPANY, OF 'lAUNTON, MASSACHUSETTS, A CORPORATION OF MAINE.
EYELET.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM HUGHES, of Taunton, in the county of Bristol and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Eyelets, of which the following 1s a s ecifi'catiom This invention re ates to an improved form of eyelet and comprises an eyelet, the marginal flan e of which is slitted at a plurality of Ipoints orming a series of petals.
' igure 1, a top plan view, shows an eyelet constructed in accordance with my inventlon. Fig. 2 is a vertical section thereof on the line 2-2 of Fig. '1. 'Fig. 3, a top plan view of an eyelet constructed in accordance with mfy invention showing how the metallic head 0 any desired substance. Fi 4 is a vertical eyelet shown in Fig. 3, said view being taken on the line 44 of Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a detail view showing the appearance of the eyelet in use.
1 represents a barrel of the eyelet formed at its lower end with scored lines or indentations 2 to weaken the barrel at this point and assist inthe clenching process. The upperend of the barrel is formed with an outwardly turned flange 3, the ed e of which is slotted at a plurality of points om the margln substantially to or near the barrel, formm a series of petals 4.
n the form of eyelet shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the head is not rotected by any coating. In the form of eye the flange 3 and its petals 4 of the eyelet may be protected by a coating 5, of enamel or any desired substance. In Fig. 5, a portion of a Specification of Letters Patent. Application filed April 16. 1907. Serial No 368.538.
the/eyelet is protected by enamel or' et shown in Figs. 3 and 4,.
Patented Nov. 26, 1907.
shoe upper 6, is shown provided with my improved eyelets.
My improved eyelet comprises a "barrel formed at its upper end with a series of independent petals. This construction facilitates the setting of the eyelet in the material without scarring since each individual petal in the setting operation can be seated upon the material without reference to the other etals, so that foreign substance on the leather engaging one petal will not prevent an even setting of the balance of the other petals, as is the case Where solid head eyelets engage foreign substances, or uneven places on the leather, in which case, as will be evident, the part'of the head of the eyeletenga ing the foreign substance will prevent the bafance of the head of the eyelet having prgper engagement with the material.
aving thus explained the nature of the invention and described a way of constructing and using the same, although without attempting-to set forth all of the forms in- Which it may be made, or all of the modes of its use, I declare that what I claim is An e elet comprising in its, construction a barrel ormed at its upper end with a series of independent petals, and having its lower end adapted to be clenched upon the material to secure the eyelet in place.
In testimony whereof I have aflixed my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM HUGHES.
