SMOKING PIPE. AIfPLIGATION FILED QSEPT.10,1907.

UNJTTED ROBERT J. MCMURRAY, OF CALIFORNIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
SMOKING-PIPE Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 31, 1907.
Application filed September 10 1907. Serial No- 392.102.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that-I, ROBERT J. MoMUR- RAY, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at California, in the county of \Vashington and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Smoking-Pipes, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to smoking pipes, and its primaryobject is, to provide a pipe so constructed as to prevent the passage of nicotin into the pipe stem.
A further object of the invention is, to provide a pipe which may be readily taken apart and cleaned.
The construction of the improvement will be fully described hereinafter in connection with the accompanying drawing which forms a part of this specification, and its novel features will be defined in the appended claims.
In the drawing :F igure 1 is a longitudinal section of a pipe embodying the invention, Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the supplemental bowl or cup of the pipe, Fig. 3 is a bottom plan of the plug which carries the supporting tube for the pipe-bowl, and Fig.
4 is a view in perspective of the pipe-bowl.
supporting tube detached.
The body portion of the pipe consists of the vertical member 1, having an inwardly projecting tuhular extension 2 intermediate its ends, a forwardly projecting arm 3 near the lower end of said member 1 terminating at its outer end in an integral cup 4, a forwardly pro ting curvmi tube 5 being also connected to the member 1, near the upper end thereof, and at its outer end merging into the cup i.
The tubular extension 2 is formed with an internally threaded socket 6 for the attachment of a stem 7 having a threaded nipple 8, fitting the socket 6. A ferrule or'sleeve 9 is placed around the nipple connection between the stem 7 and extension 2 to give additional strength to such connection.
The upper end of the member 1 is closed by a cap 10, and to its lower end is attached a cap 11 formed with a threaded nipple 12 to which is reinovably secured a cap 13 provided with a pin 14 which projects into the nipple 12.
Within the cup 4 is secured a diaphragm 15 formed with perforations 16 for the passage of smoke, and with two oppositely disposed elongated slots 17 said slots being Wider at one end than the other,
The reference numeral 18 designates a disk-shaped plug formed with a central open-v ing 19 and provided on its under surface with two diametrically opposite headed pins 20. To secure the plug 18 Within the cup the pins 20 are inserted through the enlarged ends of the slots 17 after which said plug is given a partial revolution to engage the heads of the pins within the narrow portions of the slots. From opposite sides of the opening 19 in the plug, project pins 21 for engaging the pipe bowl supporting tube 22. This tube is formed with diametrically opposite longitudinal grooves 23 and with horizontal grooves 24 on opposite sides. The upper end of the tube is formed with a semi-circular head 25 and below said head the. tube is provided with horizontal grooves 25. The
To connect the pipe bbwl, the tube 22, and the plug 18, the tube 22 is inserted through the bowl and the latter is turned to engage its pins 28 in thegrooves The tube 22 is then turned to engage the pins 21 in the grooves 24 of the tube.
It will be apparent that a pipe constructed as thus described may be readily taken apart for cleaning and also that the circuitous passage which the smoke is required to take eliectually prevents the entrance of nicotin into the stem. The smoke is drawn down through the tube 22, the perforations 16 of the diaphragm, thence upward through the curved tube 5 and downward through the member 1 before reaching the stem 7. The arm 3 serves as a convenient hand-hold for the pipe.
Having fully described my invention What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A pipe comprising a body portion having a passage therethrough, a stern 3011- nected to the body portion and connnuruoating with the passage thereof, removable caps on the ends of said body portion, an arm projecting forwardly from the body portion and terminating at its forward end in cup, a tube connecting the bowl of said o with .the passage in said body portion, on aperand a bowl detachably secured to said tube.
3. In a pipe the combination with a tubular body portion provided with an integral cup, of a perforated diaphragm secured Within said cup, a plug detaehably secured to said diaphragm, and having a central openmg, a bowl, and means for detachably connecting said plu and bowl.
4. In a pipe, he combination with a tubular body portion provided with an integral cup, of a perforated diaphragm secured with in said cup, a plug detaehahly secured. to
said diaphragm and having a central opening, a bowl, and means for detachably eonnectlng said plug and bowl comprising a tube 111 said cup, a plu formed with longitudinal and horizontal grooves, and pins projecting from said plug and bowl.
-5. In a pipe, the combination with a tubular body portion provided with an integral cup, of a perforated diaphragm secured Withdetachably secured to said diaphragm and havingta central opening, a bowl, and means for detachably connecting said plug and bowl, comprising a tube formed with a semi-circular head fitting within the bowl and with longitudinal and horizontal grooves, and pins projecting from said plug and bowl.
In testimony whereof I. aliix my signature in the presence oi two witnesses.
' ROBERT J. MGMURRAY.
