TOBACCO-PIPE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 705,193, dated July 22, 1902. Application filed January 27,1902. b'erial No. 91,396. (No model.)

To (1. whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, HENRY L. AUSTWIOK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ohicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tobacco-Pipes; and I do hereby declare the following to be afull, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to tobacco-pipes; and it consists of certain novel features of combination and construction of parts, the preferred form whereof will be hereinafter fully described, and illustrated in the accompany-' ing drawings, which are application.

The object of my invention is to insure that a cool, pleasant, and hygienic smoke will be produced and that the smoke drawn into the mouth will be entirely freed from nicotin and other injurious elements.

Other objects and advantages will be hereinafter made fully apparent.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a side elevation of my improved pipe complete. Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal section thereof. Fig. 3 is a sectional view as seen from the dotted line or m inFig. 2.

For convenience in referring to the various elements of my invention and cooperating accessories numerals will be employed, of which 1 represents the bowl of my pipe, which may be of any preferred character and formed of any desired material, while 2 represents the pipe-stem, and 3 the mouthpiece common to all pipes. made a part of this said orifice being of sufficient depth to inter sect the bore of the stem, thus dividing the bore into sections 5 and 0, respectively.

The lower portion of the orifice 4 is screwthreaded and is adapted to receive the threaded portion of the head 7, the said head being designed to carry a water-receptacle 8.

The head 7 is provided with a perfectly smooth surface above the threaded portion just described and fits snugly into the smooth portion of the orifice 4, thus forming a substantially water-tight joint. The head 7 is also provided upon its lower side with tubes 9 and 10, formed'integrally therewith or otherwise attached thereto, the former being of greater length than the latter.

The bulb-like receptacle 8, carried by the head 7, is formed of any material deemed more suitable for the purpose, preferably of hard rubber, though glass may be employed,

.if'desired.

It is obvious that the receptacle 8 is designed to contain a proper quantity of water to wholly im merse the lower half (more or less) of the tube 9, and it is therefore obvious that .the smoke must pass downward through the water and thence upward into the pipe-section 10 and thence to the mouth through the stem-section 2 and mouthpiece 3.

The bores 11 and 12 in the tubes 9 and 10 extend up through the head 7 and terminate at diametrically opposite points thereon and at such a height as to register with the bores 5 and 6 of the stem 2 when the head 7 has been properly inserted into the orifice 4. When it is desired to disconnect the line of travel for the smoke, all that is necessary is to particularly rotate the bulb-like body 8, thus bringing the bores 11 and 12 out of registration with thebores 5 and 6 of the pipestem. It will also be seen that by having the head 7 snugly seated within the orifice 4: the water is prevented from escaping through the boresll and 12 when the pipe is laid upon a table and temporarily not in use, the bores having first been turned out of registration with each other.

The various parts of my invention may be very cheaply and expeditiously manufactured and readily assembled in their respective 0p erative positions, thus enabling the pipe to be manufactured at a minimum cost. It is also obvious that the several parts of my invention, being very quickly separated from each other, may be easily cleansed from time to time as required and that since the smoke must pass downward through the water it will be freed from deleterious substances and rendered more wholesome and safer for the smoker.

While I have described the preferred combination and construction of the various parts deemed necessary in materializing myinvention, I wish to comprehend all substantial equivalents and substitutes that may fairly fall Within the scope of my invention.

What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. A pipe having a stem provided upon its under side with a hole extending into the stem past the bore thereof, in combination with a water-holding reservoir 8 having a head rigidly secured to its upper end, said head being provided with bores and with pipe- sections 9 and 10, said bores being designed to be brought by the rotation of said head into or. out of registration with the bore of thepipe-stem, all substantially as specified r 5 voir having a valve upon one end adapted to 20 v fit said seat and rotate therein as set forth.
