To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WALTER C. MaTTEsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Stockton, in the county of San Joaquin and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in (ompound Dumping-Hinges and Automatic Door-Bars for Ore-Cars; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertiains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the characters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in vehicles and more particularly to ore-cars, the improvement being directed to the dumping hinge and door releasing bar thereof.
The object of the invention is to produce a compound dumping hinge and automatic door releasing bar in connection therewith having a purely mechanical movement whereby the weight of the load may be easily turned over center before the door is opened, thereby causing the load to easily slip from the car, thus avoiding the necessity of heavy lifting and other inconveniences now experienced.
This object 1 accomplish by means of a compound dumping hinge having two distinct movements, the first lifting the load off center and the second inclining the car into a dumping position. In connection with said hinge is a door releasing bar, said bar adapted to release only on the second movement of said hinge. Also by such other and further construction as will appear by a perusal of the following specification and claims.
In the drawings similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several views.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved ore car. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the car in a dumping position. Fig. 3 is a top plan view of my improved compound dumping hinge. Fig. 4 is a side elevation of the same partly broken out. Fig. 5 is an end elevation of the same. Fig. 6 is a sectional view on a line :v :t of Fig. 2.
Referring more particularly to the reference characters on the drawings 1 represents the truck of the car and 2 the top plate of the turn table thereof. Itiveted to the top of plate 2 on each side thereof are straps 3 I having end rings 4 carrying a cross rod 5.

Outward from the forward ends of the sides 10 are arms 12 on which are pivotally mounted door releasing bars 13 having hooks 14 engaging with catches 15 on the door 16 of the car. Said bars 13 extend through sleeves 17 pivotally secured to the sides of the body 6 by means of rivets 18.
In practice as stated the normal position of the sides a are parallel on the plate 2. The parts 3, 4, 5, 7, 8 and 9 form a compound hinge between the plate 2 and body 6.
When the car is tipped for dumping it first turns on the pivoted points 0 and bearing on rod 5 to a point past center until the sides b are parallel on the plate 2. This action brings the load past a dead center with all the weight bearing from the front end against the rear end. Up to this point since the plates 10, by reason of the inclined sides 17, move as a part of the car, this causes the bars 13 to remain in hooked position. When however, the first tip is made and the sides b rest parallel on the plate 2, then any further movement of the car 6 bearing on rod'9, is independent of the sides 10 and thus as the car tips the hooks 14 pass out of engagement with the catches 15, the bars 13 sliding through the sleeves 17, thus permitting the door 16 to swing free permitting the whole load to slip out easily since before the door opened at all the whole load was past center as described. This is a very great advantage over present cars for the reason that the doors on them usually open before the load is past center, thus permitting the rear of the load to fall out first, thus requiring the operator to make a heavy lift to start and slide the remainder of the load out.
In my car there is very little lift required since the load is always practically pivoted on the center point 0 and the load is not released until past this center, as described.
Thus it will be seen I have produced an ore car which substantially fulfills all the objects of the invention as set forth herein.
While this specification sets forth in detail the present and preferred construction of my invention, still in practice many small deviations therefrom may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of my invention. I
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and useful and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:-
1. In a device of the character described a compound hinge disposed between the turn table and body of an ore car. and straight bars pivotally mounted to said hinge and provided with hooks adapted to engage with the door catches of the car, as specified.
2. In a device of the kind described a compound hinge disposed between the turn table and body of an ore car, a straight bar tulcrnmed to each side of said hinge and provided with hooks at their outer ends adapted to engage with the catches of the door of the car, and sleeves slidably mounted on said bars and pivotally'secured to said body of the car, as set forthv 3. In a device of the character described a hinge disposed between the turn table and the body of an ore ear and consisting ofhinge plates having angle bases, the forward sides of said angles lying normally parallel on said turn table, the apices of said angles being a trifle rearward off the center of the truck of the ore car, the rear ends of said plates being substantially in alinement with the rear edge of said turn table, said plates being pivotally secured to the turn table at the apices of said angle bases, and pivotally secured to the bottom of said body at the outer ends of said plates, as set forth.
4. In an ore car a compound hinge disposed between the turn table and the body of an ore car, the same being so constructed that the iirst tilt permitted said car will carry the weight off center rearward and means whereby the second tilt will automatically open the car door, as specified.
5. In an ore car a bar slidably mounted on each side of the car and provided with hooks adapted to engage with the door catches ol' the car, and means whereby said hook will be released from said catches when the rear of the ear is inclined past the center of: gravity, as set forth.
6. In an ore car a sleeve pivotally mounted on each side thereof, straight bars slidably disposed in said sleeves, hooks on the ends of said bars adapted to engagewith catches on the car door, and means for causing said hooks to automatically release from said catches when the car is inclined rearward past the center of gravity thereof, as specified.
7. In an ore car a hinge disposed between the turn table and the body of the car, said hinges having hinge plates provided with angle bases, one of the sides of said angles lying normally parallel on the said turn table the apices of said, angles being disposed a trifle rearward off center of said turn table, the rear ends of said plates being disposed in alinement with the rear end of said turn table, means pivotally connecting said plates to said turn table at the apices of said angle bases, means pivotally connecting said plates at their rear ends to said body, straight bars pivotally secured to the forward ends of said plates, hooks on the ends 01 said bars adapted to engage with catches on the door of said car, sleeves pivotally mounted on each side of said body, and said bars being slidably disposed in said sleeves, as set forth.
8. In an ore car a compound hinge disposed between the turn table and body of the car, the same being pivot ally secured to the turn table at a point slightly rearward off the center of said turn table, means pivotally securing said hinge to the body of the car at a point in aliuement with the rear end of the turn table of said car, the hinge plates of said hinge lying normally parallel on said turn table from the forward end thereof to said first named pivotal point, thence on an incline to the second named pivotal point, straight rods pivotally mounted on said hinge plates and slidably disposed through sleeves pivotally mounted on the sides of the body of the car, and hooks on said bars adapted to engage with catches 011 the car door, as specified.
