Description

P. HIBNER. ASH PAN.
I y mommy PATENTED AUG. V18, 1908.
UNITED sTATEs PATENT oEEicE.-
- FRANK HIBNER, OF NORTH PLATTE, NEBRASKA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO J. M. CALHOUN,
OF OMEGA, NEBRASKA.
-ASH-PAN.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 18, 1908.
Application filed July 9, 1907. Serial No. 382,854.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK HIBNER, a citi- Zen of the United States of America, residing at North Platte, in the county of Lincoln and State of Nebraska, have invented new and useful Improvements in Ash-Pans, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to ash pans, and one of the principal objects of the same is to provide a pan or box for lifting ashes -from an ash pit to a car in which the box is provided with a hinged bottom and spring actuated latches for closing the bottom, said latches being operated by a cord or rope to dump the contents of the box. y l
Another object of the invention is to provide simple and eiiicient means for transferring ashes andcinders from an ash pit to a car, said means comprising a box or pan having a dumping bottom and mounted upon a swinging crane.
These and other objects may be attained by means of the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the ash box suspended from a crane in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawing for a more particular description of my invention, the numeral 1 designates a sheet metal box or pan and 2 is a pair of bails pivotally' connected to metal brackets 3 secured to the sides of the box 1, said bails being adapted to be moved to the position shown in Fig. 1 to be engaged by a hook upon the elevating rope connected to the crane. The bottom 4 of the box 1 is hinged to the body of the box at one side thereof b means of the hinges 5 which are connecte by a pintle rod 6. Projecting from the front edge of the bottom 4 is a pair of latch keepers 7. Pivoted at 8 to the front of the box is a pair of latches 9, said latches having latch heads 1() which engage the latch keepers 7. Springs 11 secured to the box bear against the latches 9 to hold them in engagement with the latch keepers 7. The upper ends of the latches 9 are connected by links 12, and the inner ends of the links 12 are connected by a ring 13 to which an operating rope 14 is attached and extended down in position to be pulled by an operator to withdraw the latches 9 from the keepers 7 to dump the contents of the box 1. The crane 15 is provided with an arm 16 carrying a pulley 17 over which the rope or cable 18 passes, said rope or cable being provided with a hook 19 for engaging the bails 2, and said crane beof said box, metal bails hinged to said brackets and designed to be swung toward the center of the box, a bottom hinged to said box and provided with extending latch keepers secured to the bottom and projecting outwardly therefrom beyond the side of the box, separate latches spaced apart and pivoted to the side of the box, springs for forcing said latches into engagement with said latch keepers, links connected to said latches, and a ring to which the inner ends of said latches are connected, a rope being connected to said ring for operating said latches, essentially as described.
In testimony whereof, I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
FRANK HIBN ER.
