LARKIN STOWE, OF PLEASANT VIEW, KENTUCKY.
WALL-SECTION FOR DISPENSING-BOXES;
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 5 1907 Application filed July 31,1905. semi No. 271.890.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, LARKIN STOWE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pleasant View, in the county of Whitley and State of Kentucky, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Wall Sections for- Dispensing-Boxes, of which .the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawing.
My improvement relates particularly to wall sections to be used for covering openings in wooden boxes containing merchandise to be sold or dispensed at retail,
said section being adapted to expose the merchandise to view or permit access to the merchandise after opening a door in said section.
The object of the invention is to provide means for conveniently displaying and dispensing crackers, cakes, and other similar merchandise received by the retail dealer in wooden boxes, the goods being exposed to view but kept screened from dust, insects, and persons having an inclination to take the goodswithout purchasing.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is an elevation of my improvement applied to a box; Fig. 2 is a view in which the left hand portion is a plan and the right hand portion is a section of the structure shown in Fig. Fig. 3 is a bottom view of the right hand end of the section shown in Figs. 1 and 2; Fig. 4 is a view of the middle portion of one of my improved sections having a door instead of a window shown in Figs. 1 and 2; Fig. 5 is a detail of a modification.
Referring first to Figs. 1, 2, and 3 of said drawings, 1 is a rectangular flat plate, preferably of sheet metal. The length of said plate is sufficient to extend across the box to which the device is to be applied. At the middle of said plate is an opening, 2, preferably of rectangular form and large enough to make space for a window through which the contents of the box maybe seen. A window glass, 3, is suitably secured in said opening. In the form shown by the drawings, said glass is laid against the bottom of said plate with its edges overlap ping the edges of said opening, 2, and a metallic strip, 4, has one edge extending over the edge of the glass while its other edge is suitably secured to said plate, as by soldering or otherwise. Between each end of the plate and said opening, 2, is a longitudinal slot, 5.
Beneath each end of the plate is a jaw, 6, which stands at right angles to said plate and has a horizontal portion, 7, resting against the lower face of said plate and extending partially over the adjacent slot, 5. A screwthreaded stud, 8, rises from the portion, 7, through the slot, 5; and above said plate a thumb-nut, 9, surrounds said stud. By tightening said thumb-nut, said extension and jaw are drawn tightly against said plate, and when said nut has been loosened, said nut, stud and jaw may be moved parallel to said slot, the stud sliding in said slot.
A tongue, 10, is extended from the extension, 7, horizontally and parallel to said slot and toward the opening, 2. Said tongue serves to screen or cover the adjacent slot, 5. 7
When said section is to be applied to a box of merchandise, enough of the wall, 11, at one side of the box is cut or broken away to permit the placing of said section between the remaining portions of said wall, as shown in Fig. 1. Before placing said section into position, the thumb-nuts, 9, should be loosened and the jaws, 6, moved outward to the limits permitted by the slots, 5. After the section is in position, the jaws, 6, are to be moved toward and closely against the upright walls, 12, of the box wherebythe section is clamped iinmovably to the box. To facilitate engagement between said jaws and the walls, 12, the inner faces of said jaws may have short teeth, 13, adapted to penetrate the walls, 12. While the structure illustrated by Figs. 1 and 2 provides a window through which the contents of the box may be exposed to view, Fig. 4 illustrates a modification in which a door, 14, is applied to the opening, 2, of the plate, 1. Said door may be formed of sheet metal of proper size to cover the opening, 2, and have one edge secured to said plate, 1, by means of hinges, 15, while a button, 16, is applied to the exterior of the plate, 1, in proper position to engage the opposite edge of said door. When the section is provided with the door instead of the glass plate, the section is applied to the box in the manner already described, the top wall or either of the side walls being broken open to receive said section.
In Fig. 5, the jaw, 6, is of wood and does not have the lateral extension, 7, the plate, 1, resting directly on the upper edge of the wall, 12. In lieu of the teeth, 13, shown in Figs. 2 and 3, a pointed thumb-screw, 13, extends horizontally through the jaw, 6, and is adapted to have its point driven into the wall, 12. Obviously any number of such thumb-screws may be applied to each jaw, 6. The pointed portion of said screw projecting through the jaw, 6, constitutes a tooth which inga wall-section plate, 1, having slots, 5, a jaw adjacent l i I each of said slots, a screw-threaded stud rising from said jaw through said slot, a nut applied to said stud, and a tongue projecting from each of said jaws over the adjacent slot, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name, in pres-' ence of two Witnesses, this 24th day of July; in the year one thousand nine hundred and five.
LARKIN STOWE.
