Description

No. 856,646. PATENTED JUNE 11, 1907.
D. H. MALONE. GROCERY BIN.
APPLICATION FILED FEB. 25, 1907.

'A TTORNEYS' DAVID HAZARD MALONE, OF KELSO, WASHINGTON.
GROCERY-BIN.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 11, 1907.
Application filed February 25, 1907. Serial No. 359,119.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DAVID I'IAZARD MA- LONE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kelso, in the county of Crowlitz and State of Washington, have invented a new and useful. Grocery-Bin, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has relation to bins and it consists in the novel construction and ar rangement of its parts as hereinafter shown and described.
The object of the invention is to provide a bin especially adapted to be used in stores or similar places for holding flour, sugar and the like, although it may be used to advantage in other places for holding various commodities. The bin is mounted upon a pivot and normally stands in erect position under the shelving or counter of the establishment. WVhen it is desired to reach the contents of the bin the up er end thereof is swung from under the she f or counter when the bin will be sup ported in inclined position. In order to permit this movement the forward end of the bin is chamfered or cut away and the pivot upon which the bin is mounted is located at the lower edge of said chamfered or cut away portion. Normally the center of gravity of the bin is between the rear sides thereof and said pivot. The space left at the lower for- Ward edge of the bin is closed by a board which is hinged at its lower edge to the floor and which is connected at its ends by means of links with the vertical sides of the bin. The said board and links serve as stops for limiting the forward movement of the bin and at the same time said board serves as a closure provided at the lower front edge of the bin when the same is in erect position. The upper rear corners of the bin are chamfered or beveled in order to permit the receptacle to move from'under the superimposed structure.
In the accompanying drawing :-Figure 1 is a side elevation of the bin, and Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the same.
The bin 1 may be rectangular in horizontal section or of any other suitable configuration. It-is provided with the vertical sides 2, the front side 3, and the rear side 4. The lower forward corners of the sides 2 are cut away as at 5, while the upper rear corners of the sides 2 are chamfered or beveled as at 6. The lower edges of the sides 2 are provided with the recesses 7 which receive the pivots 8. Said recesses are located at the lower ends of the cut away portion 5. The board 9 is hinged to the floor and when the bin is in erect position the upper edge of the said board 9 lies against the front side 3 of the bin. The links 10 are pivoted at their forward ends to the ends of theboard 9 and at their rear ends are pivotally connected to the sides 2 of the bin.
From the foregoing description it is obvious that when the upper end of the bin is swung forward the board 9 will be swung upon its hinge until the cut away portions 5, 5 of the sides 2, 2 are upon or parallel with the surface of the floor. When in this position the upper end of the bin is exposed and the contents thereof may be readily reached. When in such position, the board 9 and the links 10 form a stop for limiting the forward swing of the bin. WVhen the bin is swung back upon the pivots 8 into an erect position the center of gravity of the bin is between said pivots and the rear side 4. Consequently the bin will remain in such position without necessitating fastening devices.
Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 2- A bin comprising vertically disposed sides having their forward lower corners cut away and recesses provided at their lower edges at said cut away portions, fixed pivots located in said recesses and upon which the bin is adapted to swing, a board hinged to the floor in advance of the bin and having a plane side lying against the front of the bin and links pivoted at their forward ends to the ends of said board and at their rear ends to the vertical outer sides of the bin.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
DAVID HAZARD MALONE.
