GATE -VALVE Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLL-mI-Wv DOOLITTLE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gate-Valves, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to valves and particularly to wedge gate valves, the principal objects of the invention being to prox'ide such a valve with a spring seating disk to more effectively and easily accommodate itself to its position upon the valve seat. Other objects are, to make the structure more light and strong with econonly of material and to gain the elasticity in the seating face of the valve without making an insecure connection between the valve and the valve stem, These and other advantages hereinafter to appear, I attain by the construction shown in preferred form in the accompanying drawing, wherein- Figure l is a partial side elevation and section of the valve casing;

The valve casing 5 has a straightaway opening therethrough and is provided with inclined seating rings 6 therein and on top is provided with the usual hood 7 and stuffing box 8 and a yoke 9 carrying the hand wheel 10 for turning the screw stem ll of the valve, which parts may be made in any usual or preferred construction. The valve stem l l. is joined to a wedge shaped gate valve by its rigid head 12, which has'one side 13 made rigid throughout, and the other side, 14, provided in such form as to be resilient on its peripheral seating surface From Figures 1 and 2, especially, it will be seen that the side l3 of the valve is provided with a laterally projecting annular web 15, and radial webs 16 which stiffen it. The said annular web 15 being of smaller diameter than the seating surface of the spring side 14, it will be seen that the edges of this side of the valve are somewhat resilient around the entire circumference, while the stem and the side 13 are rigidly con nected together and are not resilient. The structure is thus made as light as possible and quite strong, and at the same time one side of the Valve is provided With a resilient overhung circumference upon which the seating face of the valve is carried. The edges of the valve, as shown in Figure I, are provided with guides 17 which engage and slide on guide track 18 as is usual in such constructions. It will be observed that the stem 11 and the rigid head 12 will be readily alined on one side of the valve seat, the face 13 having some play in the spring of the stem, and the other side 14 has convenient allowance for'a certain degree of resiliency to accommodate itself to the position of the sloping valve seat 6 in the casing 5.-
Having thus described my invention and illustrated its use,- what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is the following:
1. In a gate valve, the combination with a casing'having oppositely disposed seats and a fluid passage, of a stem and a reciprocating-gate for closing such passage comprising opposing seating members, one of which is provided with radially directed stiffening ribs and the other of which has yielding edges constituting a seating face and is connected to the rigid member inside its yielding edges by means of a cylindrical ribv 2. In a gate valve, the combination with a suitable casing and converging seats therein, of a valve stem and a gate having one side connected rigidly with the stem and braced by ribs, and having a substantially cylindrical web, and a second seating disk attached to said web and having overhung edges whereby it has a resilient seat upon the casing, substantially as described.
In a gate valve, the combination with a suitable casing and converging valve seats therein, of a wedge valve having one side rigidly braced with ribs and rigidly connected to the valve stem, :1 second valve seating disk and a connection between the rigid side and the second disk comprising" an annular rim of less diameter than the seating face of the valve, whereby the said second seating disk has an overhung rim and is resilient on all sides, substantially described.
