ROBERT L. PRATT, OF GLENFLORA, TEXA S.
VALVE.
Application filed March 9, 1918.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, Bonner L. PRATT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Glenflora, in the county of Wharton and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Valves, of which the following is a specification, refer ence being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain improvements in valves and it is an object of the invention to provide a device of this general character having novel and improved means whereby a tight operating stem is assured.
It is also an object of the invention to provide a novel and improved device of the character described wherein a stem comprises two relatively movable sections and wherein each of said sections is provided with a shoulder coacting with a seat 'within the bonnet or other part of the casing to prevent leakage by the stem.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved valve whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of my invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a fragmentary view partly in vertical section and partly in elevation illustrating a valve constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention;
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary view illustrating the coacting end portions of the members comprised in the valve stem as herein set forth; and
Fig. 3 is a sectional view of the meeting ends of the members of the valve stem said section being substantially at right-angles to the section taken in Fig. 2.
As disclosed in the accompanying drawings C denotes a portion of a casing of a valve provided with an opening 1. Disposed over said opening 1 is a plate 2 provided with a flange 3 whereby the positioning of the plate 2 relative to the opening 1 is assured. Resting upon the plate 2 is the Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented cc. 24, 191.8.
Serial No. 221,532.
bonnet B. Coacting with the outer marginal portion of the bonnet B is the hold ing flange 4L which is in threaded engage ment with the casing C.
At substantially its axial center the plate 2 is provided with the opening 5 having its wall beveled to afford an outwardly facing seat 6. The bore of the bonnet B is also provided with the seat 7'facing inwardly.
The stem S comprises two longitudinally alined sections 8 and 9. The opposed ends of the sections 8 and 9 are provided with the interlocking clutch faces 10 whereby relative longitudinal movement of the sections 8 and 9 is permitted, and said sections are constantly urged in opposite directions through the medium of the expansible member 11 interposed between the ends of said sections, said expansible member being herein disclosed as a conventional type of coil spring. Each of the sections 8 and 9 adjacent its inner end is provided with the bevel shoulder 12 adapted to coact with the seat 6 or 7. The inner end portion of the section 8 of the stem S as herein disclosed has threaded engagement with the outstanding hollow boss 14 carried by the slide member 15 or the like. In order to hold the boss 14 and the parts connected thereto against rotation I provide the periphery of said boss with the longitudinally disposed groove or channel 16 in which extends an end portion of a pin 18 or the like carried by the lower end portion of the tubular guide member 17 depending from the plate 2 and concentric to the opening 5 in said plate. The member 17 serves as a guide for endwise movement of the slide 15 and in which the boss snugly fits.
The expansible member 11 serves to hold the shoulders 12 firmly against their coacting seats 6 and 7 and therebv assuring a tight joint at all times irrespective of how pressure is exerted from within or without. By clutching the sections 8 and 9 together, both of said sections are rotated in unison and in the same general direction and which causes the shoulder 12 of the outer section 9 to leave its seat when the valve is closed, but pressing the shoulder 12 of the lower section 8 firmly against its seat 5 whereby leakage is prevented.
From the foregoing description it is thought to be obvious that a valve constructed in accordance with my invention is particularly Well adapted for use by reafacing inwardly,
son of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled and operated and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without departing from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and forma tion of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice except as hereinafter claimed.
I claim:
1. The combination with a valve casing having an opening, a plate disposed across said opening and provided with an outwardly facing seat, a bonnet overlying said plate and provided with an internal seat facing inwardly, and a stem disposed through the bonnet-and through the plate. said stem being provided with oppositely facing shoulders engageable with the respective seats of the plate and the bonnet.
2. The combination with a valve casing having an opening, a plate disposed across said opening and provided with an outwardly facing seat, a bonnet overlying said plate and provided with an internal seat and a stem disposed through the bonnet and through the plate, said stem being provided with oppositely facing shoulders engageable with the respective seats of the plate and the bonnet, said stem being in sections, the opposed end of the sections being provided with interlocking'clutch faces.
3. The combination with a valve casing having an opening, a plate disposed across said opening and provided with an outwardly facing seat, a bonnet overlying said plat and provided with an internal seat facing inwardly, a stem disposed through the bonnet and through the plate, said stem being provided with oppositely facing shoulders engageable with the respective said opening and provided with an out-- wardly facing seat, a bonnet overlying said plate and provided with an internal seat facing inwardly, a stem disposed throughthe bonnet and through the plate, said stem being provided with oppositely facing shoulders engageable with the respective seats of the plate and the bonnet, said stem being in sections, the opposed ends of the sections being provided with interlocking I clutch faces, and an expansible member interposed between the sections for constantly 65.
urging the same in opposite directions.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
