RAILROAD-TIE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 21, 1907.
Application filed February 21, 1907. Serial No. 358,709.
T0 at whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM JAOOBSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sawyer, in the county of Door and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Railroad-Ties, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to new and'useful improvements in track fastenings and it has particular reference to a railroad tie constructed preferably of metal, concrete or cement in combination with novel means for fastening the track in combination with said tie.
The detailed construction will appear in the course of the following description in which reference is had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, like characters of reference designating similar parts throughout the several views, wherein,
Figure 1 is a longitudinal section through my improved tie, showing the fastening means associated therewith in side view, and Fig. 2 is a top plan View thereof.
Referring specifically to the figures 1 designates my improved rail tie constructed of metal, concrete or cement and provided with a central longitudinal slot 2 in its upper face. The tie 1 is further provided adjacent the ends of said slot with the angular upstanding rail anchors 3 cast integral or embedded in the tie as the case may be, in the surface of the said tie between the edges of the slot 2 and the side of the tie. The anchors 3 are alined on said tie in pairs and adapted to engage the inner flange of the rails when the same are in position.
Fastening means for the rail comprises a pair of substantially V shaped rods or bars 4 and 5 provided on their outer spaced and free ends with upturned hooks 6 and 7 respectively adapted to engage the outside flanges of the rails when the same are placed in position against the anchors 3. The V shaped bars 4 and 5 are adapted to lie centrally Within the slot 2 of the tie, the hooks 6 and 7 thereof engaging the outside flanges of the rails just within the ends of said slot and spreading to points just within the sides of the same. The V shaped bars 4 and 5 are also provided at their base or closed ends with the centrally extending legs 8 and 9 respectively, preferably constructed integral therewith and screw threaded to receive a turnbuckle 10 between the ends of the same to form suitable adjusting means, whereby the said bars or rods 4 and 5 may be tightened or loosened upon the rail in order that the same may be easily and quickly fastened in position or taken up as desired.
Having fully described my invention I claim:
1. In a device of the character described the combination with a tie provided with alined upstanding anchors adapted to bear against the inner flanges of the rails and with a central longitudinally extending slot therein, of a pair of V shaped rods disposed within said slot and provided with upturned hooks at the free ends thereof adapted to engage the outside flanges of the rails and means for adjustably securing the inner ends of said V shaped rods substantially as described.
v2. In a device of the character described the combination with a tie provided with alined upstanding anchors adapted to bear against the inner flanges of the rails and with a central longitudinally extending slot therein, of a pair of V shaped rods disposed within said slot and provided with upturned hooks at the free ends thereof adapted to engage the outside flanges of the rails, said rods being provided with centrally extending legs at their inner ends and a turn buckle connection adapted to be screwed on said legs to adjustably secure said rods together substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
' WILLIAM JACOBSON. Witnesses:
