SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 642,427, dated January 30, 1900. Application filed August 19, 1899. Serial No. 727,817. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ELsWoRTH G. CARTER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Coal Bluff, in the county of Vigo and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Railway-Ties, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in railway-ties, and particularly to that class of ties in which suitably supported metallic sleepers are used in lieu of the common wooden sleeper.
It consists of an improvement in the tie for which Letters Patent No. 608,648 were issued to me August 9, 1898. In that patent there is shoWn,described, and claimed a metallic crosstie in combination with recessed blocks, preferably made of burnt clay, said tie having its outer ends bent in and clenched to said blocks within the recesses or channels and having central struck-in portions between the blocks bent into the inner ends of the channels of each block and there clenched, whereby the tie is held on the block independently of other means of fastening and each block embraced between an end and a central fastening device of the tie. In that invention the crosstie was all in one piece.
The objects of the present invention are to produce a tie that will be easier and cheaper to manufacture, can be more readily applied to the rails, can be transported With greater facility, yet can be quickly put together at the point on the railroad where the tie is to be used, and can be more readily removed or replaced should the tie or the supporting-blocks become broken.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side view; Fig. 2, a plan View showing one of the blocks and end-fastening sections removed, and Fig. 3 a detail of endfastening section.
Referring to the drawings, A are centrallychanneled blocks, preferably formed of clay and longitudinally supporting the metallic stringer C. At its central portion the stringer is struck in toform gripping-lips D, which are bent inward and clenched Within the channels B ofthe blocks. Near its outer ends the stringer or tie is struck upto form lips F, which are adapted to be clenched over the flange e of the rail E. The rail rests on the stringer under the lip.
G is a separate metallic section forming an end fastening for the rail. This section G is provided at its outer end with the grippinglip D', which corresponds to lips D and is bent in and clenched within 'the channel of the block. The section G is also provided with the raised portion g, Which overlaps the end of the strin ger C and through Which bolts or rivets g are passed to secure said section and stringer together. The end g2 of the section overlaps the flange c of the rail and is bent down upon the same to coact with lips F in holding the rail on the blocks.
The stringer G is first secured to the blocks,
the rail-Harige placed under the struck-up lips thereof, and the latter then clenched down and the end-fastening section then placed over the rail-flange and secured in place on the stringer and blocks.
' It Will be seen that all the parts are readily separable, yet when in place form an extremely strong, durable, and properly elastic tie.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- In a railwaytie in combination with channeled blocks, a metallic cross-tie or stringer supported on said blocks, said tie provided with central struck-in portions between the blocks clenched into the channels of the blocks, and end-fastening sections having their outerend bent in and clenched Within the channels of said blocks, and raised overlapping portions at their ends extending over the end portions of the tie or stringer and over the liange of the rail and bent against said iiange, and means of engagement between said end sections and the main stringer, substantially as described.
