Description

Afec- W Y @time da BENJAMIN FLOWERS, or JERUSALE M, OHIO.
i Letters Patent No. 85,082, dated December' 22, 1868.
'IMPROVEMEN T IN' SHING-LING- ROFS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and makngpait of the sam-u.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN FLOWERS, of J erusalem, in the county ot'Monroe, and State ofOhio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in-Shingling Roof-Angles; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being` had to the accompanying drawings,- i'orining part of this specification.
This invention re'lates to a new and improved'method oi' shin gling the gutters, valleys, or angles formed by the joining of roofs, wherebyall leakage is prevented, without any important increase in the expense; and
The invention consists in the method of applying angular metallic plates to said gutters or valley-s, as will be hereinafter more iiillydescribed. l
The drawing represents a perspective view of a roofgutter or angle, ihrmedby the intersection of two roofs covered according to my invention. v
Figure 2 is a detached view of one of the angular metallic pieces which are used in combination with the shingles.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A and B represent the two Aroofs, whichV intersect or joint, and forni an angle or glitter'. J
C represents the shingle, and
D represents the metallicsectons.
To malte this portion of a'roof water-tight with shingles, has hitherto been considered a very diicult performance.
If a long metallic gutteris used, a good deal of exy pense must be incurred, audits decay or failure in any one part destroys the whole.
By commencing and laying up, with the shingles, the metallic sections or angular pieces D, the job becomes an easy one, and the expense trifiing, while, in` case of the failure 'of a single piece, repairs are readily made, but in that event no leakage can occur.
Instead of a single thickness of metal, as in the case of the continuons metallie'gutter, I have the angle protected by4 two, three, or four thicknesses of metal, according to the length of the sections, thus rendering the gutter or Valley as perfectlr water-proof and durable as any part of the roof. r
In this example of my invention it will be seen that the metallic sections are laid up with tl'le shingles on Y 011e roof, and that the` shingles on the other' roof are laid on, and cover the wing of the section which extends on 'to 'that roof.
I claim as new, and desire to secure'byrLetters Pat ent- The angular metallic sectioned), connecting the gut-'- ters or valleys oftivo roofs togcther, when applied as described, by having one wing'of each'o'f the sections laid up with the shingles on one roof, and the other,
wingsof the same resting upon each' other, andfcovered by the shingles entire other roof, as hereinlsliown. and described. p,
' y BENJAMIN FLOWERS. Witnesses:
