Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFTon THOMAS S. CARD, OF CORTLAND, NEW YORK.
' IMPROVEMENT IN ATTACHING ROOFING TO BUILDINGS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 57,860, dated September 11, 1866.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS S. CARD, of Cortland, in the county of Cortland and State of New Nork, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Mastic Booting; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the mode of constructing and covering the same.
The roof is covered with the ordinary felt,
prepared in coal-tar used for the purpose of covering buildings.
In laying the roof I commence at the eaves with a strip of one-third the ordinary width. The upper edge is nailed to the sheathing, and the strip folded down over the nails until the lower edge reaches the eaves. The second piece is of two-thirds the ordinary width. The upper edge of this is, in like manner, nailed to the sheathing, and then the strip is turned down over the nails, so that the lower edge shall reach the caves. The third piece, of full width, is applied in like manner. The successive pieces are of full width and similarly applied. They are nailed on at the distance of one-third of their width apart, so that the lower edge of each shall be above the upper edge of another, and so that there shall be at each part of the roof three thicknesses of felt. As the pieces are successively applied they are-each covered with coal-tar and litharge, applied with a brush, and then rolled with a heavy roller of iron, which may be heated.
The roof thus prepared is covered to the depth of from a quarter to half an inch with a mixture of raw coal-tar and equal parts of clean sand and ground marble, plaster, or water-lime.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The hereinbefore-described process of con structing and covering the roofs of buildings, in the manner and with ingredients compounded substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
THOMAS S. CARD.
