To ALL WHOM IT MAY GONCERN;

Be it known that I, R. P. HENRY, of Akron, in the county of Summit, and State of Ohio, have invented a new and improved Roofing; and that the following description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing hereinafter referred to, forms a full and e'xact speeication of the same, wherein I have setV forth the nature and principles of my said improvements, by which my invention may be distinguished from allothers of a similar class, together with such parts as I claim, and desire to have secured to meby Letters Patent.

This invention relates to a new and improved means for keeping the joints of boardor plank roongper- Afeetly tight and weather-proof; and it consists in having the joints of the boards or planks covered by asheet .metal strip, the edges-of which are bent d own and fitted in grooves in the boards or planks, vertical plates or break-waters being also inserted in the grooves, and the whole covered by a wooden battenfashereinafter fully shown and described, whereby a perfectly weather-proof roof of the kind specified is obtained. Inthe accompanying sheet of drawingsl Figures -1 and 2 represent tranverse sections ofmy improvement.

A represents a lath of the roofing, to which the boards'or planks B are secured by nails inthe usualor any proper manner. Over the abutting edges of the boards or planks there are placed sheet-'metal strips C, the edges of which are turned or bent down, and driven in grooves, as shown clearly at a in both figures. These sheet-metal strips cover the joints -of the boards or planks. D represents sheet-metal strips,` which are driven in the same grooves as the edges of the strips C. The strips D have a vertical position, land extend upward considerably above the upper surfaces of the boards or planks. These strips serve as break-waters, and effectually prevent any water from nding its way to the joints. The upper parts of the strips or break-waters D and the `strips C are covered by battons E, which may he nailed or screwed down upon the boardsor planks. The grooves in. the battons which receive theA strips or break-waters D are designed to be suiieiently wide to admit ofthe shrinking of .the battens, boards, or planks. i

I do not claim separately the strips C, nor the battens E; but I do claim asnew, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The vertical strips or break-waters D, tted in grooves in theboards or planks B, and projecting above the upper surfaces of the same, in connection with the battens E, substantially as and for the `purpose set forth.

I further claim the combination of the battens E, strips C, and break-waters D, all arranged and applied tothe boards or planks B, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
