THE Nnams PET REGINALD SEBA POPE, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
WATCH-GUARD.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented April 16, 1907.
Application filed January 19,1907. Serial No. 353,116.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, REGINALD SEBA POPE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Boston, in the county of Suffolk and Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Watch-Guards, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to watchguards, and particularly to a guard for preventing the loss of the watch by accident or theft from the pocket of the owner. In an article of this sort it is necessary to have ease of application and adjustment, so that the guard may be applied to the watch without tools or mechanical skill and so that the finish and appearance of the Watch will not be marred by its attachment. To this end I have devised a guard which may be readily sprung into place and which will be self-adjusting and automatic and at the same timebe so simple in structure as to be proof against the necessity of rep airs and cap able of production, even in precious metals, at a nominal cost.
The device consists of a stem-embracing member fitted with safety-hooks formed and arranged so. as to assume proper operative position in the pocket and applicable by simple pressure to the watch-stem. The form and arrangement of these parts will be more fully described in the specification which follows and are shown in the drawings, which form a part thereof, in which 1 Figure 1 is a view of my device applied to a watch; Fig. 2, a plan view, and Fig. 3 a front view thereof.
1 is a resilient encircling loop made substantially circular in form and of about the size of a watch-stem. The ends of 1 approach at 2 to embrace the stem when in place. These ends then diverge, as at 3, to practically the diameter of the loop 1, so that the stem will be guided between the ends and gradually spring them apart togain access to the space within the loop 1.
4 are depending safety-hooks adapted to engage with the fabric of the garment. These books drop below the plane of the loop 1 sufliciently to make them seek the flattened surface of the face or back of the watch and so be in contact with the walls of the pocket. '1 he hooks are sharpened at 5.
The guard is applied to the Watch by simply placing the diverging throat 3 against the stem of the watch and pressing on the loop till the portions 2 spring apart sufliciently to allow the stem to enter the loop 1. l/Vhen in place, the portions 2 close against and around the stem and hold the guard in place. The hooks will readily arrange themselves on the face or back of the Watch, and
if displaced will tend to seek such an arrangement.
In removing the watch from the pocket the fingers of the user shield the hooks from the fabric; but a pull upon the Watch-chain or an upturning of the pocket causes the hooks at once to engage the wall of the pocket and prevents the escape of the watch from it.
l/Vhat I therefore claim, and desire to se cure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a device of the class described, a resilient stem-encircling loop. having ends approaching each other, said ends terminating in diverging hooks.
2. In a device of the class described, the combination of a resilient stem-encircling loop having ends approaching each other, said ends thereafter diverging, and a guard- .hook de endin below the lane of said stem loop.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence'of two wltnesses.
REGINALD SEBA POPE.
