To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM NIEBAUM. a citizen of the United States, residing at Tonganoxie, in the county of Leavenworth and State of Kansas, have invented a new and useful Can-Opener, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has relation to can openers, and it consists in the novel construction and arrangement of its parts as hereinafter shown and described.
The object of the invention is to provide a can opener of simple and cheap construction, one of such peculiar configuration as to afford ease of operation and positive action. 7 I
The opener consists, primarily, of a body portion having a longitudinally extending opening with a downwardly extending shouldered portion at one end terminating in a penetrating point. The opposite end of the body portion is provided with an inclined'shank to which is attached a handle. The longitudinal axis of the handle is inclined at an angle to the longitudinal axis of the body portion. The said longitudinal axis of the handle also extends in a lateral direction at an angle with relation to the longitudinal axis of the body portion. A cutter is mounted for movement along the body portion and is provided with means for fixing its position upon the said body portion. The said cutter is of peculiar formation and may be easily and readily detached from the body portion and a new one substituted in its place.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the can opener, Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same, partly in section. Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the can opener.
The can opener comprises the body portion 1 which is provided with an elongated opening 2, said opening being located in the longitudinal axis of the said body portion 1. The outer end of the portion 1 is provided With the downwardly extending flange 4 which terminates in the shoulders 5, 5. The can penetrating point 6 is attached to the lower end of the flange 4 between the shoulders-5, 5. The rear end of the portion 1 is downwardly inclined, as at 7, and merges into the inclined shank 8 to which the handle 9 is attached. The longitudinal axis of the handle 9 is pitched at an angle to the longitudinal axis of the body portion 1, also the longitudinal axis of the handle 9 extends laterally at an angle to the longitudinal axis of the body portion 1. In other words, the said handle extends downwardly and forwardly with relation to the body 1. The cutter Specification, of Letters Patent.

10 is adapted to move longitudinallyof the body portion 1, the said cutter being provided with a vertically extending blade 11 and an upwardly extending lug 12 which passes through the opening 2 of the body 1 and is provided at its upper end with laterally extending shoulders 13, 13, which lie upon the upper side of the body portion 1. The transverse dimension of the lug 12 is less than that of the opening 2, so that the said lug 12 may be turned in the said opening for the purpose of swinging the shoulders 13 over the opening so that the cutter may be removed from the body portion 1. The set screw 14 engages a threaded perforation in the cutter 10 and passes through the opening 2 of the said body 1. The shoulder 15 of the set screw 14 bears upon the washer 16, which, in turn, rests upon the upper surface of the said body portion 1. i
From the foregoing description, it is obvious that the cutter pin may be shifted longitudinally of the body portion 1 and secured in fixed position with relation thereto by means of the set screw 14. This is desirable in order that the opener may be applied to cans of difierent diameter. Also when one cutter becomes'mutilated, destroyed, dulled, or injured, it may be removed and a new one substituted in the place thereof. Also, as the cutter is connected with the body portion by two members passing through the opening 1, viz., lug 12 and set screw 14, the cutting blade 11 cannot turn or twist with relation to the body portion 1. The specific angle and inclination of the handle 9 with relation to the body 1 makes the cutting operation positive and easy, as the hand of the operator operating the cutter is in advance of the cutting blade. This will prevent any inclination on the part of the can from tilting. It will also be observed that the shank 8 passes entirely through the handle 9 and is clenched at the point 17 against the rear end thereof.
Having described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A can opener comprising a body portion, a blade attached thereto, said body portion having at one end :1 can penetrating point, a handle attached to the opposite end of said body portion and having its longitudinal axis pitched at an angle to the longitudinal axis of the body portion both vertically and horizontally and lying in ad Vance of the body portion and below the same.
2. A can opener comprising a body portion having an opening extending longitudinally thereof, a can penetrating point attached to one end of said body portion, a handle attached to the opposite end of said body portion, a cutter having at one end a blade and at its other end a lug which passes through the opening of the body portion extending opening, a cutter attached to the body portion said cutter having a blade and a lug which passes through the opening in the body portion, said lug being provided at its upper end With laterally extending shoulders which lie over the upper surface of the body portion, a set screw passing through the opening of the body portion and engaging the cutter, said set screw having a shoulder, and a washer interposed between the shoulder of the set screw and the upper surface of the body portion.
