Description

No. 682,53l.
{No Model.)
Patented Sept. 10, IQ DI. N. CLOUTIER.
CAN OPENER.
(Applmabion filed May 18. 1901.)
WueM/boz UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
NOE OLOUTIER, OF ATTLEBORO, MASSACHUSETTS.
CAN-O PEN ER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 682,531, dated September 10, 1901.
Application filed May 13, 1901.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Non CLOUTIER, a citizen of the Province of Quebec, Dominion of Canada, residing at Attleboro, in the county of Bristol and State of Massachusetta have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gan-Openers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The present invention has for its object to provide a can-opener that will be simple in construction,- strong and durable, and easily operated in opening either a square or flatsided can or a round can,- as may be desired;
and it consists in a can-opener constructed substantially as shown in the drawings and hereinafter described and claimed.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a perspective view of a can-opener in the position it will assume when used for opening square cans or receptacles; Fig. 2', a side elevation showing the can-opener reversed and in the position when used on round cans or receptacles.
In the accompanying drawings, A represents the body of the can-opener, which is provided with a suitable handle B, of metal and integral with the body, or of any other suitable material and afterward secured thereto in the usual manner, the form and construction of the handle and the manner of connecting it to the body being immaterial and in this particular may be changed or modified without departing from the principle or essential feature of the invention. The body A terminates at its front end in a flat fulcrum-plate O and is provided with a suitable axial pivot-point D, and secured to the side of the plate is a knife or cutter E,
Serial No. 60,106. (No model.)
detachably connected thereto by the screw a, said knife or cutter being of any suitable form and construction. The knife or cutter E is only brought into use in opening square or flatsided cans, the plate 0 acting as a fulcrum to the knife or cutter.
The body A of the can-opener is formed with a plurality of steps b, to which are detachably connected, by means of the screws c, suitable knives or cutters F, which may be of any preferred construction. These knives or cutters, as will be noticed, are on both a different vertical and a diiferent horizontal plane, so that the device is adapted to various sizies of round cans without the necessity of adjusting the knife or cutter, and the knives or cutters being on different horizontal planes the ones not in use are up out of the way when the same are over the top of the can. For instance, should the outer one of the knives or cutters or the one nearest the handle be brought in use the other knives or cutters would be above the plan of the one in use and out of the way of interfering therewith.
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A can-opener having a fulcrum-plate and a knife or cutter connected thereto for opening square or fiat-sided cans, and an axial pivot-point and a plurality of knives or out ters disposed on different Vertical and hori zontal planes, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
