UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRANK B. HOWARD, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO HECTOR GAS LAMP COMPANY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., A CORPORATION OF CONNECTICUT.
MANTLE-HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 2, 1907.
Application filed July 26,1906. Serial No. 327,805.
To all whom tt may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK B. HOWARD, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Mantle-Holder, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to improvements in mantle holders, such as are adapted to support a gas lamp mantle from the top and to support it from the top of the chimney or shade.
The object of my invention is to produce a very simple structure of this kind, which can be made up easily from a single piece of material; and can be easily shaped to safely support a mantle, and to hold the mantle in shape for perfect combustion, and in such a way that no shadow will be cast.
To this end my invention consists of a mantle holder, the construction of which will be hereinafter described, and the novel features claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters and figures of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a vertical section of a chimney and mantle provided with my improved attachment, and Fig. 2 is a detail inverted plan view of the mantle holder.
The chimney 9 can be of any usual kind, or in case the shade projects above the chimney the ring 10 which forms a part of my support can be carried on the shade.
I have shown it 011 the chimney, but it will be understood, of course, that the chimney and shade are synonymous, so far as supporting the mantle are concerned, as each extends above the mantle top. The ring 10 is proside, but which may obviously be on the inside as well,
and the object of which is to prevent the displacement of the ring.
When the ring is died out or struck out if of metal, or otherwise made, it is formed with a cross bar 12 which is preferably, though not necessarily integral with the ring and the cross bar is preferably given a twist, as shown, so that the web of the middle portion will be vertical, and this is provided with a slot leading upward and laterally from the lower edge in the form of an inverted L, as shown at 13, thus producing a hook which is adapted to receive and support the loop 14 of the mantle 15. The cross bar 12 should be depressed somewhat, as illustrated, to prevent making the loop 14 unnecessarily long.
It will be seen that this structure is of the simplest nature and is consequently extremely cheap, and further, that it rides safely on the top of the chimney or shade, as the case may be, and that it affords a perfect support for the mantle and holds the latter vertical and parallel with the chimney 9.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent,-
A mantle holder struck up from a single piece of material and comprising a flanged ring to fit a chimney top, and a cross bar twisted to bring the middle portion of its Web vertical, and provided with a hook on said cross bar.
FRANK B. HOWARD.
