INGANDESGENT MANTLE.
APPLICATION FILED JUNE 14,1905.
l lilllllllllllll LZiNESSES:
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DANIEL J. CLARK, OF JERSEY CITY, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOR TO' HILLIARY ELDRIDGE AND JAMES C. YOUNG, OF JERSEY CITY,
NEW JERSEY.
Specification of-Letters Patent.
iatented. Dec. 12, 1905.
Application filedJune 14,1905. Serial no. 265,152..
To all whont it Wtay concern:
Be it known that I, DANIEL J. CLARK, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of J ersey City, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Incandescent Man tles of which the following is a specification.
1 My invention relates to incandescent mant es.
It has for its object to provide an incandescent mantle comprising a plurality of hollow sections placed together to form a ring, whereby the illuminating-surface of a single mantle is increased, and if one of the sections becomes burned out or broken it may be removed and replaced by a new section, thus effecting a great saving of the mantles.
It has for a further object to provide a mantle of the character set forth embodying advantages in point ofsimplicity and inexpensiveness of construction, attractiveness, and effectiveness in use.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a sectional view showing my mantle supported on a burner. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the mantle. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a modified form of the mantle.
In all the figures of the drawings illustrating my invention like reference characters designate corresponding parts.
Referring to Figs. 1. and 2 of the drawings, 1 designates a burner-head connectedwith the gassupply by a pipe 2 and comprising'a casting embodying a central chamber 3, a reticulated cap 4 therein, and downwardly-extending radiating burners 5, leading from the chamber3. a mantle-hanger and mantle, to behereinafter described, in the proper relation to the burners, bosses 6 are formed on the burners, and each is provided with a vertical bore 7, intersected by horizontal screw-threaded bore 8, engaged by a set-screw 9. A globe 10, open at the top and closed at the bottom, is supported on the supply-pipe, so as to surround the burner, mantle, and hanger.
The hanger employed for supporting the mantle comprises independent frames and -ment each flame of the burner will be To provide means for supporting 26, each formed of a single piece of wire bent to present a horizontal portion 27, having large openings connected by narrow passages and a vertically-extending portion 28, adapted to be inserted into one of the bores 7 in the burner and be secured therein by the setscrew 9.
The incandescent mantle, which is supported on the hanger above described, comprises independent hollow curved sections and 31, substantially U-shaped in cross-section and having pockets 32, 33, and 34, into which the burners project, connected by narrow passages and 36. By this arrangeartially confined within a pocket of the maIItle. Referring now to the modification shown by Fig. 3 of the drawings, this form of mantle comprises a lurality of hollow independent substantia ly semicircular sections and 41. The hanger for supporting this form of mantle comprises independent substantially semicircular frames 42 and 43, having vertically-extending portions 43.
These hangers are not herein claimed, as.
they form the subject of an application which I have filed concurrently herewith.
I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise details and arrangements of parts shown and described, but reserve the right to all modifications within the scope of my invention. 1
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. An incandescent mantle consisting of a plurality of independent hollow sections inclosing a space therebetween, substantially as described.
2. An incandescent mantle consisting of a plurality of independent hollow sections inclosing as ace therebetween, each section having a p urality' of pockets, substantially as described.
3. A ring-like incandescent mantle, comrising a plurality of independent curved iiollow sections substantially U -shaped in cross-section, substantially as described.
4. A ring-like incandescent mantle, comp'rising a plurality of independent curved municating pockets, substantially as de- 10 scribed.
Signed at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, this 15th day of May, A. D. 1905.
