Description

PATENTBD JUNE 11, 1907.
A. J. SAUERBIER.
HAND STAMP.
APPLICATION FILED 1120.1, 1906.
mwmwmmmmmm m HEW I T m T 8 MW UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE,
HAND-STAMP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 11, 1907.
Application filed December 1, 1906a Serial No. 345,965.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANTHONY JOHN SAUERBIER, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Wellsville, in the county of Oolumbiana and State of Ohio, have in vented new and useful Improvements in Hand-Stamps, of which the following is a specification. This invention relates to hand stamps, designed more particularly for canceling postage stamps, but capable also of use as an ordinary rubber hand stamp, and one of the principal objects of the same is to provide means whereby the type face of the stamp will always have contact upon the paper or stamped envelop whether the stamp is placed evenly thereon or not.
Another object of the invention is to provide simple means for insuring the cancellation of stamps without especial care being taken by the operator to firmly press the device against the envelop or stamp thereon.
These and other objects may be attained by means of the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a hand stamp or canceling device made in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section of the same.
Referring to the drawing for a more particular description of my invention, the numeral 1 designates the type block to which the rubber type 2 is secured in any suitable manner. The type block is recessed upon its upper face, as at 3, to provide seats for one end of the spring 4. As shown in the drawing three springs are utilized, but it will be understood that any suitable number may be employed, and for each spring a recess 3 is formed in the upper face of the type bar. Extending through the center of each of the recesses 3 is a bolt 5, the heads 6 of which are countersnnk or seated in recesses in the lower face of said block, as shown in Fig. 3. The handle block 2 is provided with recesses 3 on the lower surface thereof, and the upper ends of the springs 4 are seated in said recesses, while the bolts 5 pass through openings 4? extending centrally through the recesses 3 and through the block, said bolts being fitted with adjusting nuts 5 at their upper ends. Secured to the upper face of the block and centrally thereof is a metal housing or bracket 6, andthe central bolt 5 is adapted to extend within said bracket when the device is operated. A knob or handle 7 a is secured in place over the bracket 6 by means of a shank 8 which extends through said knob or handle and is provided with a nut 9 at its upper end.
From the foregoing it will be obvious that my invention, when used as a hand stamp or as a canceling device for postage stamps, when the type face is pressed upon the paper or envelop containing a stamp, the type block will yield relatively to the handle block and will secure a good impression of the type upon the paper, even should only one end of the type block have contact on the paper when first pressed thereon, owing to the action of the springs 4. WVhen it is desired to secure the device to a canceling machine, the knob 7 a may be readily removed from the shank 8 and the latter inserted in the reciprocating member of the canceling machine and secured therein by means of a pin passing through the hole 10 in said shank.
My invention is of simple construction, is composed of few parts which cannot readily get out of order. The springs 4 can be readily adjusted to regulate the tension thereof by means of the nuts 5, and the device as a whole, will be found very reliable and efficient for its various purposes.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim is:
1. A hand stamp comprising a type block, recesses in the upper surface of said type block, springs seated in said recesses, a handle block provided with recesses for the opposite ends of said springs, bolts passing through the type block and handle block, and provided with nuts for adjusting the tension of said springs, a bracket or housing secured to the handle block over the central bolt, and provided with an upwardly extending shank, and a handle or knob secured to said shank, substantially as described.
2. A canceling stamp comprising a type a canceling machine, substantially as deblock, and a handle block, springs interposed scribed.
between said blocks, a housing or bracket In testimony whereof, I aflix my signature secured to the handle block over the central in presence of tWo Witnesses.
spring, a knob secured to said bracket by ANTHONY JOHN SAUERBIER. means of a shank extending from said bracket, Witnesses and means whereby said handle or knob WILLIAM C. MCMURRAY,
may be removed and the device attached to W. F. HANEY.
