SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 508,292, dated November '7,' 1893. Application filed February 2, 1893. Serial No. 460,647. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, MARBY P. DYSART, of Cornelia, in the county of Armstrong and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hand-Stamps; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification.

My invention relates to certain improvements'in hand stamps.

The object of the invention is to produce a hand stamp, exceedingly cheap, simple, and durable in construction and composed of a minimum number of parts.

The invention consists in certain novel features of construction and in combinations of parts more fully described hereinafter and particularly pointed out in the claims.

Each type is provided with a transverse slot or opening so arranged and of such size that A suitable retainingpin h is passed transversely through openings in the die and through the slots in the type as shown, thereby retaining the type in the diebut permitting limited reciprocation thereof.

' With my improved device any number of type can be quickly and securely held in position by the pin, which, preferably, is a split spring pin which will serve as a handy implement in the place of tweezers when not in the die in removing or changing the inky type.

The coiled spring and plate in the die yieldingly press the type outwardly so as to project beyond the face of the die, and hence in use the force of the concussions in stamping mail, &c.,a'r e cushioned and every type is caused to make an impression, and the user can be assured of the dates, &c., of the type being visibly and plainly formed, on the mail or other matter so stamped, which is a feature of no little importance.

By using the split spring pin there is no danger of the parts becoming loose and the type falling out, which is the general complaint with hand stamps of this class now in use.

Itis evident that any other style of retaining pin might be employed other than the one herein shown, and that other various slight changes might be made in the forms, constructions and arrangements of the parts described without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention.

Having thus fully described my invention, whatI claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is

' 1. Ahand stamp provided with a'die-having a socket, a cushion therein, the type resting on said cushion and having openings, and a pin in the casing and extending through the openings in'thetype, for the purposes'set forth.

2. A hand stamp comprising the die having the socket as described, a cushion therein comprising a coiled spring, the type resting thereon having transverse openings, and a split'spring pin extending removably through said casing and type for the purpose set forth.
