Be it known that I, ROBERT OEDERSTROM, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful 11nprovements in Tongs, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this speciiication.

My invention relates to tongs for use in gripping and removing objects of any description from a receptacle in which they may be contained, and which are more particularly intended for use in removing fish from barrels or :other receptacles in which they are packed.

The invention has for its object to provide c tongs through the medium of which a firm grip may be secured upon objects even though slippery or slimy, without tearing them.

Figure I is a perspective view of my tongs with the jaws open. Fig. II is an enlarged side elevation of the jaws in closed position. 1 designates the levers of my tongs which are pivoted to each other at 2. At the forward ends ofthe tong levers are jaws 3 which are of heart shape and are the narrowest at their terminations while on the rear ends of the tongs-levers are finger-loops 5 by which the tongs may be easily retained in the hand when they are poked down into a bai rel of sh. Upon the inner faces of the jaws 3 and extending transversely thereof are ridges 4 which point toward the heads of the jaws and which are so positioned upon such jaws that when the jaws are brought together the ridges of one jaw will enter the spaces between the ridges of the other jaw, as seen most clearly in Fig. Il, thereby providing for the ridges obtaining a better grip upon any object to which the jaws may be applied without lacerating or tearing it.

I claim A pair of tongs consisting of two movable connected levers and a jaw on each lever adapted to be brought into opposition by movement of the levers, a series of parallel ridges alternating with smooth open surfaces on the meeting faces of said jaws, the ridges on each jaw being positioned to lie opposite the open surfaces on the opposite jaw when the jaws are brought into opposition.
