To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM DALTON, of Schenectady, in the county of Schenectady and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Locomotive-Trucks, of which improvement the following is a specification.
My present invention relates to locomotive-trucks of the general class or type of and is an improvement on that set forth in Letters Patent of the United States No. 823,491, granted and issued to American Locomotive Company as my assignee under date of June 12, 1906; and its object is to provide further and readilyadaptable facilities for controlling the lateral motion of a truck of such type, particularly at comparatively high speeds.
The improvement claimed is hereinafter fully set forth.
In trucks of the construction set forth in Letters Patent N 0. 823,491 aforesaid, under the conditions of weight ordinarily carried thereon and rubbing surfaces as finshed on machine-tools it has been found in practice that sufficient friction is exerted to properly control the lateral movements of the locomotive when running at speeds up to, say, sixty miles per hour; but at higher speeds greater frictional resistance is required, this necessity being accentuated by the reduction of the coeflicient of friction resultant-upon the frictional surfaces becoming worn smooth in service.
My present invention provides means whereby the additional frictional resistance required at comparatively high speeds is exerted and the degree of friction proper to accord with the variable condition of the rubbing surfaces isrendered capable of adjustment in accordance therewith and with the speed at which the locomotive is operated.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a plan or top view of a locomotive-truck embodying my invention; Fig. 2, a transverse section, and Fig. 3 a vertical longitudinal central section through the same.
My invention is herein exemplified as embodied in a lateral-motionlocomotive-truck, which in its leading structural features and except as to those relating specifically to my present invention corresponds, substantially, l with that set forth in Letters Patent No. 1
823,49]. aforesaid. As in said Letters Patent, the frame 5 carries pedestals 5 on its ends, in which the axle-boxes 3 are fitted, and the truck-wheels 4 are fixed upon an axle 2, the journals of which rotate in bearings 3 in the axle-boxes upon which the truck-frame is supported through the intermediation of springs 9. An upper center casting 8 fits in a socket 8, secured to the main frame 1 of the locomotive, the lower end of the upper center casting 8 fitting in and abutting on a lower center casting 7, which in turn rests and abuts by a lower frictional face on a friction-plate 6, secured detachably to the top of the truck-frame, which,with the connected friction-plate, has the capac ity of lateral motion relatively to the lower center casting 7 and the main frame of the locomotive, with which the latter is connected through the upper center casting and its socket. It will be of course understood that the truck-frame is to be provided with suitable means for returning it to normal posi tion in line longitudinally of the locomotive after it has been diverted therefrom in passing a curveas, for example, a centeringspring, followers, and thrust-rods, as de' scribed and showninPatent No. 823,491 aforesaid but as these means do not in and of themselves form part of my present invention and are, moreover, familiar to those skilled in the art they need not be herein at length set forth.
Under my present invention I impose the additional frictional resistance to lateral movement which is desired for high speeds by means of a clamping mechanism by which the movable lower center casting 7 is caused to bear with increased force against the friction-plate 6 and which also provides addi tional frictional surface on the upper side of the bearing portion of the casting 7. In the form herein illustrated, which has been found to be desirably adapted to the requirements of practical service, the clamping mechanism comprises two clamping-bars 16, extending longitudinally in the upper portion of the truck-frame and fitting on the upper surfaces of the flanges 7 on the lower end of the movable center casting 7, which are clamped between the bars 16 and the friction-plate 6 by springs 17, interposed between followers 18 and 19 on vertical clamping-bolts 20, which pass through the top of the truck-frame 5, the clamping-bars 16, and the followers 18 and 19 and are provided with adjusting-nuts 21, engaging threads on their upper ends. The upper surfaces of the flanges of the lower center casting 7 thus constitute additional or secondary frictionsurfaces, which abut against corresponding friction-surfaces on the lower sides of the clamping-bars 16.
By means of the abovedescribed construction or an equivalent thereof the normal load on the movable center casting may be increased to any desired extent by changing the size and tension of the springs 17 and the increase be varied as required. by proper manipulation of the adjusting-nuts 21. The maximum load required being determined, the springs are proportioned correspondingly, and the load isapplied by screwing down the adjusting-nuts to properly meet the condi tions of the rubbing surfaces. It will be seen that by utilizing both the upper and lower surfaces of the flanges of the movable lower center casting '7 as friction-surfaces the effect of the load is doubled in the exertion of frictional resistance.
I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The combination, in a locomotive, of a main frame, a truck-frame connected with the capacity of relative lateral movement thereto, abutting friction-faces connected to the main and truck frames respectively, and means for imparting additional frictional resistance to the relative lateral movement of the main and truck frames.
'2; The combination, in a locomotive, of a main frame, a truck-frame connected with the capacity of relative lateral. movement thereto, abutting friction-faces connected to the main and truck frames, respectively, and a clamping mechanism by which pressure is imposed upon. said friction-faces.
3. The combination, in a locomotive, of a main frame, a truck-frame connected with the capacity of relative lateral movement thereto, abutting friction-faces connected to the main and truck frames respectively, and means for imparting frictional resistance in adjustable degree to the relative lateral movement of the main and truck frames.
4. The combination, in a locomotive, of a main frame, a truck-frame connected with the capacity of relative lateral movement thereto, abutting friction-faces connected to the main and truck frames respectively, a clamping mechanism by which pressure is imposed upon said friction-faces, and a friction-face in said. clamping mechanism abutting on a friction-face connected to the main frame.
5. The combination, in a locomotive, of a main frame, a truck-frame connected with the capacity of relative lateral movement thereto, abutting friction-faces connected to the main and truck frames respectively, a secondary friction-face on a member connected to the main frame, a friction-face on a member connected to the truck-frame andv main frame, a truck-frame connected with the capacity of relative lateral movement thereto, a member connected to the main frame and having upper and lower frictionfaces, and mechanism for clamping said friction-faces between friction-faces abutting thereon and connected to the truck-frame.
8. The combination, in a locomotive, of a main frame, a truck-frame connected with the capacity of relative lateral movement thereto, a friction-plate fixed to the upper portion of the trucleframe, a member connected to the main frame and having a lower friction face abutting on said. friction-plate, clamping-bars fitting against upper frictionfaces on said member connected to the main frame, bolts connecting the clamping-bars and truck-frame, springs bearing on the clamping-bars, and adjusting-nuts engaging the bolts and bearing on the springs.
