Be it known that we, FRANKLIN L. BAR- BER and CHARLES S. TWALTON, citizens of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have .invented certain new and useful Improvements in Car-Trucks; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
Our invention relates to improvements in car trucks, and particularly to six-wheeled equalized freight car trucks. 'lo the above end, generally stat-ed, the invention consists of the novel devices and combinations of dcvices hereinafter described and defined in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate the invention, like characters indicate like parts throughout the several views.
Referring to the drawings,
Figure 1 is a fragmentary plan view of the improved car truck;
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same, with some parts broken away and some parts sectioned;
Fig. 3 is al transverse vertical section taken on the irregular line 3-3 of Fig. 1;
F ig. 4 is a detail view in vertical section taken on the line 4 4 of Fig. 2; and
Fig. 5 is a detail view in section taken on the line 5-5 of F ig. 2.
Each side frame of the improved car truck is indicated by the numeral 6 and, as shown, is of cast steel with a general cross section in the form of a. box, the walls of which are suitably reinforced. It is, of course, understood that the side frames may e made from structural steel. The bottom of each side fra-me 6 is cut vaway at 7 to aord openings for journal boxes which are mounted between pedestals 9, with freedom for vertical movement. The pedestals 9, as shown, are formed separate from the side frames 6, have a greater transverse width than said side frames, and their upper ends are bifurcated to receive said side frames and are detachably secured thereto by short nut-equipped bolts 10. The lower ends of each pair of pedestals 9 are rigidly connected, below the respective journal box 8, by a tie bar 11 secured thereto by bolts 12. lle further assist in rigidly connecting the tie bars 11 to the pedestals 9the ends thereof are bent upward to engage the backs of said pedestals. The wheels andk axles of the improved truck are indicated by the numerals 13 and 14, respectively.
Between each pair of wheels 13, the side frame 6 is dropped and has formed therein 6,7at each end thereof, is formed a spring-cap Openings are formed in the side frames 6 to permit casting thereof, for the sake of lightness and to permit the assembling' of certain of the parts of the truck located within the side frames.
Pairs of angle cross-ties 18 are rigidly connected to the drop portions of the side frames 6 and the ends thereof extend in the bolster openings l5 and are secured by rivets to said side frames. The vertical fianges of the cross-ties 18 extend upward and the horizontal lianges thereof are turned toward each other and brought into close engagement, except at their ends where they are spread to bring said vertical gagement with the inner wearing surfaces of the bolster columns 16 and their horizontal flanges into seats formed in the side frames 6, at the bottoms of the bolster openings 15.
The truck bolster and, as shown, four ends projecting into the. bolster openings '15. Side bearing brackets 20 are integrally cast with the bolster 19 and are 1protected by steel shoes 21. The lower memer of a center bearing 22 is also cast integral with the bolster v19. Brake hangers 23 are riveted to the inner faces of the side frames 6. Spring-caps 24 are supported on coiled bolster springs 25 arranged in groups of four and seated on the side frames 6, at the bottoms of the bolster openings l5. The ends of the spring-caps 24 are notched in the customary manner to receive the bolster columns'16, which act as guides therefor. The ends .Of th@ bQlSCGl' 1,9 ,are supported on the 19 is of the double type flanges into enis cast in one piece with its links 40, through spring-caps 24 by lateral motion rollers 26 mounted in contours 27 formed in the under side of said bolster and in thetops of said spring-caps.
Intermediately ulcrumed on each journal box 8, is a cast equalizing lever or bar 28 having on its lower face a fulcrum lug 29 mounted in a bearing seat 30 on the respective journal box 8 and supports said lever for rocking movement transversely of said journal box. These equalizing levers 28 are located within the side frames 6 and have formed in their upper surfaces and at the ends thereof concL ve seats 31. Supported on the outer ends of the outer equalizing levers 2S, directly below the spring-caps 17, are spring-bases 32, having on their under sides segmental bearing lugs 33 mounted in the respective seats 31 and which ,permit the required rocking movements of said levers. Also cast with the spring-bases 32, at the ends of the bearing lugs 33, are flanges 34 which embrace said levers and thereby hold the spring-bases against transverse movement thereon. Interposed between each springbase 32 and the overlying spring-cap 17, is a yielding abutment, in the form of two coiled springs 35, spaced, one in advance of the other, longitudinally of the respective equalizing lever 28.
The inner ends of the outer equalizing levers 28 are connected to the ends of the intermediate equalizing lever 28 of each side frame 6 by pairs of bell-crank levers 36 and compression members, in the form of coiled springs 37. Each bell-crank lever 36 has on its sides segmental bearings 38, which are mounted on short axially alined trunnions 39 cast integral with the inner vertical walls of the side frames 6. The short horizontal arms of the bell-crank levers 36 extend under the adjacent ends of the equalizing levers 2S and are connected thereto by rectangular which said bell-crank levers and equalizing levers project. The upper transverse portions of the links 40 are made convex to fit the seats 31 and the lower transverse portions formed convex to tit concave seats 41 formed on the under side of the short arms oi? the bell-crank levers 36.
rI`he long arms of the bell-crank levers 36 extend vertically upward and terminate in bearing heads 42, which extend into socketlike bearings 43 lformed in the outer ends of horizontally disposed and axially alined plungers 44. These plungers 44 are mounted in bearings 45 formed in the upper portions of the bolster columns 16, for endwise sliding movement longitudinally, with respect to the equalizing levers 28. The inner ends of the plungers 44 project into the bolster openings 15 and have integrally formed therewith spring-caps 46, between which the compressionl springs 37 are compressed,

By reference to Fig. 3, it will be noted th( t the ends of the bolster 19 are beveled to clear the compression springs 37 It is also important to note that the bolster springs 25, abutment springs 35 and compression springs 37 are ot one size and shape, thus making the same interchangeable, which assists materially in assembling the improved truck and in replacing springs, in case they are broken or worn out.
From the above description, it is evident that the load of the car is direct on the double bolster 19 4and it, in turn, is supported Jfrom the side frames through the bolster springs 25 and lateral motion rollers 26. rIhe weight on the side frames is distributed on through the equalizing levers 28, bell-crank levers 36 and compression springs 37. It is also evident that each wheel of a car truck is allowed to` move vertically, independent of the other thereof.
That we'claim is t 1. In a car truck, the combination with side frames and journal boxes, of equalizing levers intermediately ulcrumed on the journal. boxes, abutments between the outer ends of the equalizing levers and side frames, bell-crank levers having one of their arms connected to the inner ends of said equalizing levers, and compression springs interposed between the other arms of the bell-crank levers.
2. In a car truck, the combination withl side Jframes and journal boxes, of equalizing levers intermediately ulcrumed on the journal boxes, springs affording abutments interposed between the outer ends of the equalizing levers and side frames, bellcrank levers having one of their arms connected to the inner ends of said equalizing levers, and compression springs interposed between the other arms of the bell-crank levers.
3. In a car truck, the combination with side frames and journal boxes, of equalizing'levers intermediately fulcrumed on the journal boxes, abutments betweenV the outer ends of the equalizing levers and side Jframes, bell-crank levers, links connecting one of the arms of the bell-crank levers with the inner ends of the equalizing levers, and compression springs interposed between the other arms of said bell-crank levers.
4. In a car truck, the combination with side frames and journal boxes, of equalizing levers intermediately ulcrumed on the journal boxes, abutments between the outer ends of the equalizing levers y and side frames, bell-crank levers having one of their arms connected to the inner ends of the equalizinglevers, plungers mounted in seats Y'in the side frames and with the outer ends of which the Vother arms of the bell-crank levers engage, said plungers having springcaps on their inner ends, and compression springs'interposed between said plungers and seated on the spring-caps thereof.
5. In a car truck, the combination with side frames and journal boxes, of equalizing levers intermediately iulerumed on the journal boxes, abutments between the outer ends of the equalizing levers and side frames, bell-crank levers having one of their arms connected to the inner ends of the equalizing levers, plungers mounted in seats in the side frames and having in their outer ends sockets in which the other arms of the bell-crank levers are seated, said plungers .having springraps on their .inner ends, and eompression springs interposed between said plungers and seated on the spring-caps thereof.
6. In a ear truck, the combination with side frames and journal boxes, of equalizing levers intermediately fulcrumed on the joui-rml boxes, springs affording abutments between the outer ends of the equalizing levers and side frames, bell-crank levers having one ot their arms connected to the inner ends of the equalizing levers, and compression springs interposed between the other arms of the bell-crank levers, said compression and abutment springs being intei-changeable.
7. In a car truck, the combination with side frames, journal boxes, bolster, and springs supporting said bolster from the side frames, of equalizing levers intermediately fulcrumed on the journal boxes, abutments between the outer ends of the equalizing levers and side frames, bell-crank levers having one of their arms connected to the inner ends of the equalizing levers, and compression springs interposed between the other arms of the bell-crank levers, said Copies of this patent :may be obtained for ve cents each, by addressing the Commissioner bolster and compression springs being interchangeable.
8. In a. car truck, the combination with side frames, journal boxes, bolster, and springs supporting said bolster from the side frames, of equalizing levers intermediately fulerumed on the journal boxes, springs aitording abutinents interposed between the outer ends of the equalizing levers and side frames, bell-erank levers having one of their arms connected to the inner ends of the equalizing levers, and compression springs interposed between the other arms of the bell-crank levers, said abutment, compression and bolster springs being interchangeable.
9. In a ear truck, the combination with side frames having bolster openings, journal boxes, a bolster having its ends extending into said bolster openings, and springs supporting the bolster from the side frames, of equalizing levers intermediately fulcrumed on the journal boxes, abutments between the outer ends of the equalizing levers and side frames, bell-crank levers having one or' their arms connected to the inner ends of the equalizing levers, plungers mounted in seats in the side frames and with the outer ends of which the other arms of the bell-crank levers engage, said plungers having spring-caps on their inner ends which extend into the bolster openings above the bolster, and compression springs interposed between said plungers and seated on the spring-caps thereof.
