Description

PATENTED MAR. 5
J.BAGLEY.
GRADBR.
A APPLICATION FILED JULY 10, 1906.
- W/ TNE SSE S ATTORNEYS JOHN BAGLEY, or TACOMA, WASHINGTON.
GRADER.
No. s4c,27s.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented March 5, 1907.
Application filed July 10,1908. Serial No. 325,481.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN BAGLEY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Tacoma, in the county of Pierce and State of Washington, have-invented anew and Improved Grader, of which the following is a full, clear, andeXact description. 1 The invention relates to graders, and is especially useful in connection with devices of this character intended for operation in hardground, such as shale. 1
The object of the invention is to provide a grader which is simple, strong, and durable in construction and which presents 'a plurality of blade edges.
A further object of the invention is to provide removable teeth for a device of the character described Which are peculiarly adapted for use in hard or stony ground.
The invention consists in the construction and combination of parts to be more fully described hereinafter and particularly pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in Which similar characters of referenceindicate corresponding-parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a perspective vieW of the grader, Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section of a part of the invention, and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a tooth-bar.
ings,'I provide side lates 1, which lie in vertical planes paralleF to each otherand are imperforate to prevent the escape of earth through the sides of the "device. are of sheetesteel or other similar suitable. material. To the rear end of the side plate is fastened by'riveting or otherwise an end plate 2, comprising a bucket.
p is curved. about ahorizontal axis 'and presents a concavity toward the front of the grader.
I prefer to attach the end plate 2 to the side plates 1 by means of anglo-brackets 3, curved to conform to the end plate and rivets 4. At each transverse edge of the end plate is a scraper-blade between the side plates 1 and is set ,with a slight inclination outward to cause it to take hold on the ground. The projecting sides of the blades are beveled to present cutting edges adapted to scrape up the surface of the ground as the grader is drawn along upon the same. The scraper-blades 5 are secured to the end plate 2 by means of plates and the scraper-blades.
Ihe end plate 5,.Which extends transversely I angle hrackets 6, -which are riveted-respectively, to the side ,is a double ll'ieplntes 5' may be removed T he anglebrackets may be mounted either inside of or outside of the side plates. Between. the front ends of the side plates extends a crossbrace 7, holding them rigidly together at the proper distance.
I provide a bail 8, Whichis connected to the front ends of the side piates 1, adjacent to either edge thereof, by nxeans of plates having offset ends, the plates being riveted to the side plates, while the ends of the tail are pivoted between the offset ends of the plates and the side plates. '10 the tail 8 is con nected the draft mechanism, nhich 1r ay be actuated by the purpose. For attachingto the grader the draft mechanism for hauling the'grader tack Ward staples 10, having to the end plate 2 at the rear side thereof.
ln order to make the grader partitularly adapt alle. for use in hard ground, I provide a plurality of tootlnhars 12, havingshazpened or pointed ends or teeth 13 and split shanks 14. The tooth-bars may be mounted upon the straper blade, as shown most clearly in Fig. 1, and set uted thereto'hy rivets or bolts 15. The split fOl'IllGCl in the shank 1.4 is so fashioned with an int lined bottom that it fits' .l.oselyupon the scraper-blade. The shank whith is slightly curved and is adapted to eferring more particularly to the drawof the tooth-bar has an extension 16,
eyes 11, are riveted extend beyond the scraper-blade and onto the end plate or hu ket and to be riveted to the same. It will he understood that there advantage in this onst;-uct:ion, as it not only more seturely holds the teeth in plat e, but at the same time rigidly attat hes the St 1 aper-l lade to the Lu; ket. The toothhas adapted to be attathed at the outermost ends of the scraper-blades me not provided with the extension 16, for the reason that the st-rapentlades extend laterally heyond the butket, and therefore this extension would be LllllHt The rivets for attaching the end tooth-bas in plate pass througl'l-the tooth-bar shank, the set-aperblade, and the bra: ket 6. The teeth may be of any suitable. form \\'lll( h is adapted to ente-r hard ground and break up the same into small fragments adapted to be scraped into the butlrei. but are. preferably of the form shown in :Figs. 2 and 3. If so desired, the tooth-bars may be attached by means of bolts instead of rivets, and in this ease they and replaced when necesstarry.-
lOO
mounted thereupon and projecting beyond plate, blades secured adjacent to the edges In using the apparatus it is adjusted upon the ound' and drawn in the direction to-' wan? which -the concavity of the bucket faces?" The lower blade scrapes up the earth,
and it bears teeth these assist in br'eak ,cured to the horizontal edges of said end ing up-shale or the like, and the material is gathered into the bucket and is borne along with the grader. When the end of the haul is reached, the grader is drawn back by the draft device attached at the back of the bucket and a new haul or drag is made. The grader may be reversed, and, ovvingto the construction employed, the" blades or the teeth thereupon may be readily removed for repair. 1
Having thus. described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by'Letters Patent 1. Agrader-having a bucket presenting a plurality of blades having cutting edges, one of said blades having a plurality of teeth 1 said edge.
2. In a grader, a bucket having an end of said end plate, one of said blades having teeth with split shanks mi'ounted thereupon,
said shanks and said teeth having extensions.
adapted to be secured tosaid end plate.
3. A grader having side plates, and an end plate curved about a horizontal axis and mounted'between satd'side plates, blades seplate, and teeth having split shanks mounted upon one of said blades with the teeth projecting beyond the edge thereof. j
4. A grader having side plates, means figidly connecting the front ends there&, an
end plate extending between the side'p'lates and curved around a horizontal axis,- presenting the concave side to the front of the grader to form a bucket, blades secured to the longitudinal edges of said end plate, and teeth having split shanks mounted upon one of said blades and extending beyond the edge thereof, said shankshaving extensions rigidly secured to said end late,
In testimony whereof have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses. y
