COMBINED ROAD-G-RADER, DRAG, AND HARROW.
Application filed March 16 Specification of Letters Patent.
To all UJZLO'HL it may concern:
lie it known that I, Hana/r): DAVIS Gurrnr, a citizen of the United States, residing at Unionville, in the county of Putnam and. State of lllissouri, have invented certain new and useful lnuproven'iei'its in a Combined Road-Grader, Drag, and Harrow; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
'lfhis invention relates to improvements in combined road g aders, drags and barrows.
'ihe object of the invention is to provide a machine of this character which may be regulated for light or heavy work and which may be quickly transformed from a road grader to a d rag or harrow.
A further object of the invention is to provide means whereby the draft connections .may be regulated to change the position of the grader.
\l'ith thee and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel feature;' of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims. i
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a. top plan view of the invention arranged as a grader; Fig. 2 is a sectional View taken on the line i2-2 of big. 1, Fig. 3 is a tional view on the line 33 of Fig. 1.. 1' ig. L} is a plan view of the machine arranged for light work; Fig. 5 is a similar view showing the machine arranged a barrow; and Fig. 6 a longitudinal sectional view of the machine in the form shown in l' ig. (5.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 denotes the 'aper blades or bars of the machine which are connected together at their upper edges by a series of obliquely disposed connecting bars, 2, and are held in position by a brace bar, The blades, 1, consist of a vertical portion, 4-, at the upper and lower edges of which are formed. forwardly projectinginclined or beveled extensions, The b \-'eled sides or faces of said extensions n'iay be, if desired, provided with removable scraper plates, (1. and, if desired, similar plates, 7, may be removably secured to the rear side of the blades adjacent to their lower edges. The blades may also be provided on their lowe sides and adjacent to their forward edges with metal shoes or plates, 8, the forward edges of which engage i l l 1 I Patented Oct. 20, 1908. 1908. Serial In. 121,410
the lower edges of the front scraping plates,
(3, when. the latte are applied to the blades. Secured to the forward end of the central connecting bar, is a clevis, 5), with which adapted to be loosely connected by means of an eye, 10, a. draft tongue, 12' The draft tongue is provided on its lower side with a guard plate lii, between which, and the underside of the tongue, is pivotally mounted a whillietree or similar draft; device, ll, said whitlletree being pivotally connected with the tongue by a pin or bolt, 15. On the opposite side of the tongue, adjacent to its rear end, areuilraft regulating hooks, in, to which are adjustably connected the forward ends of draft regulating chains, 17, the innercnds of which are connected to the for- \\"ard.ends of the outer connecting bars, 2. ()n the outer connecting bar, adjacent to one end of the blades, is secured a drivers seat, 18.
Arranged between the ends of the blades at one side of the machine'is a spacing blorlr. 19, to the outer side of which is cured a guiding shoe, or landside, 20, the lower edge of which projects below the lower sides of the blades and is adapted to enter the ground and thereby guide or hold the machine to its work. The landside is fieferably removable and may be detached from the machine when desired.
in Fig. of the drawings, the machine is shown as having the rear blade removed and the brace bar 3 connected at one end to one end of t to forward blade, and at its opposite end to the rear end of the connect ing rod. at the opposite side of the machine.
\Vhen arranged in this positiom-the grader is adapted for use in connection with light work. When the parts are arranged in the position shown in Fig. 5, the device may be employed as a harrow, and when so used is provided with a supplemental tooth bar, 21, which is bolted or otherwise secured to the rear side of the front blade and is provided throughout its length with a series of herrow teeth which project below the forward blade in position to enter the ground. The
connecting bars, 2, are preferably provided with a series of apertures, 22, adapted to re ceive barrow teeth, 23, which are detachably secured in any suitable manner.
In the normal working position of the machine, as shown in Fig. 1, the draft regulatin' chains, 17, are connected loosely to the draft-hooks, l6. lVhen, however, it is desired to change the position of the grader, or scrape more or less dirt in either direction, the chain on one side or the other of the tongue is shortened by connecting one of the rear links with the hook, while the chain on the opposite side is slackened.
Frdm the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood withoutrequiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion and the minor details of constructionmay be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what 1' claim as new and desire to secure by Lettors-Patent, is:
1. A combined road grader, drag and harrow comprising transversely disposed blades, a landside removably attached between the ends of the blades at one side of the grader, and means whereby the position of the grader may be changed to throw the dirt to either one side or the other.
2. In a machine of the character described, transversely disposed blades having along their upper and lower edges forwardly projecting beveled extensions, a landside adapted to be detachably secured between the ends of the blades, at one side of the machine, a
loosely connected draft tongue, and detachblades in operative position, a draft hook ans tongue loosely connected to said drafthook, draft regulating chains connected to the opposite ends of the grader and to said tongue, and a landside secured to the ends of said blades along one side of the machine, substantially as described.
4. A machine of the character described comprising transversely disposed blades, aseries of connecting bars, said bars having formed therein aseries of harrow teeth assages, a brace bar, a landside arran ed a ong one side of the grader, a detaehab e harrow bar, a draft tongue, and means to connect the machine with said ton ue whereby the position of the former maybe changed, substantially as described.
my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
