SILAS BICE, OF GLOVERSVILLE, NEW YORK.
CEMENT CHIMNEY-TOP- Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 9, 1906.
Appliqation filed March 16, 1906. Serial No. 306,408.
lb all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, SILAs BIoE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Gloversville, in the county of Fulton and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cement Chimney-Tops; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as willenable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in caps for chimneys; and the object of the invention is to produce a simple and efficient device of this nature made of cement and terracotta and adapted to be fitted on the top of the chimney, thereby forming a means for protecting the chimney and afford ample opportunity for the drafts through the flue.
My invention comprises various details of construction and arrangements of parts, which will be hereinafter fully described and then specifically defined in the appended claim.
I illustrate my invention in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the application of my cap to a chimney. Fig. 2 is a sectional view vertically through the chimney and my improved cap attached thereto. Fig. 3 is a bottom plan view of the Feference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates a chimney of masonry, and C designates my improved cap, which is shown in the drawings as being made of rectangular shape and is provided with a flange D, which projects over the edge of chimney. The under surface of said flange has a continuous groove E formed therein and adapted to form a drip whereby the water must drop before it comes in contact with the chimney. The cap, which is hollow, is provided with oppositelydisposed elongated slots F in the longitudinal side and openings K, while the top is provided with an elongated slot N.
From the foregoing it will be noted that by the provision of a cap made in accordance with my invention a simple and efiicient means is afforded for protecting the masonrywork of the chimney by the flange of the cap, which projects two inches over top of the chimney, thereby coverin the edge of the brick, while ample draft is secured by the openings formed in the sides and top of the cap. When the cap is adjusted upon the chimney, it should be securely held in place with cement or mortar.
' While I have shown my cap as made of a particular shape, it will be understood that I do not confine myself to the shape shown, but the same may be varied to meet difierent conditions.
What I claim as new is A cap for chimneys having an oblong raised portion which is hollow and provided with tapering walls adapted to rest over the flue of a chimney, said raised portion having registering o enings in the opposite ends and sides thereo and a slotted top, the upper surface of which is slightly oval, the projecting sides and ends of the cap having an un dercut groove adjacent to its edge, as set forth.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
SILAS BICE.
