Description
No. 705,377. Patented Aug. 5, I902. J. BARBEE.
EXTENSION STOVE LEG.
(Application filed. July 27', 1901. (No Model.)
JAMES BARBEE, OF COLUMBUS, GEORGIA.
EXTENSION STOVE-IE6.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 706,377, dated August 5, 1902.
Application filed July 2'7, 1901. Serial No. 69,968. (No model.)
To In whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JAMnsBARBEE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Columbus, in the county of Muscogee and State of Georgia, have invented a new and useful Extension Stove-Leg, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is an extension stove-leg, the object of the invention being to provide a stove-leg which can be extended or adjusted, so as to compensate for any irregularity of the surface upon which the stove rests.
WVith this object in view the invention consists, essentially, in providing an ordinary stove-leg with a tube or sleeve from the in nor side, said tube or sleeve being slotted longitudinally and provided with bayonet-slots communicating with the said longitudinal slot and a footpiece having a rod extending upwardly therefrom, the upper end of said rod carrying a lug adapted for engagement .with the bayonet-slot, whereby the leg and footpiece can be adjustedwith reference to each other, thereby providing an extensible stove-leg.
The invention consists also in certain details of construction and novelties of combination, all of which will be fully described hereinafter and pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a perspective View of an extension stove-leg constructedin accordance with my invention, aportion of the leg proper being broken away to indicate the extension features. Fig. 2 is a view taken from the inner or rear side of the stove-leg. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the footpiece and extension-rod. Fig. 4 is a detail elevation of the stove-leg. Fig. 5 is a section taken on the line 5 5 of Fig. 1.
In carrying out my invention I employ an ordinary stove-leg A. Upon the rearor inner side thereof is formed a sleeve or tube B, slotted vertically and longitudinally upon the rear side, as shown at B, and at definite intervals are produced bayonet-slots B said slots being arranged alternately upon opposite sides of the longitudinal slots B and communicating therewith. The footpiece C has an extension-rod D projecting upwardly there from, said rod carrying a laterally-projecting lug E at its upper end. The extension-rod is of such size that it will fit snugly within the tube or sleeve B, and the lug E is of such size and shape that it will slide freely within the longitudinal slot B, and by turning the same to one side or the other the said lug can be brought into engagement with the bayonetslots B thereby locking the extension-rod in position. The rod D is slightly longer than the tube B, such difference in length being preferably the height or length of the lateral lug E, so that the said lug can be passed entirely through the tube and turned to one side, resting upon the top of the door, as most clearly shown in Fig. 2, thereby securing the footpiece firmly against the bottom of the le It will thus be seen that I provide an exceedingly cheap, simple, and efficient construction of stove-leg, as it is only necessary to move the lug E from one bayonet-slot to another in order to effect an adjustment up or down, and in case no adjustment is desired the lug can be looked upon the top of the tube or sleeve, as most clearly shown in Fig. 2.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination with a stove-leg, of a tube or sleeve integral therewith, said tube or sleeve being slotted longitudinally and having bayonet-slots arranged alternately upon opposite sides of the longitudinal'slot and communi eating therewith, a footpiece having a rod extending upwardly therefrom, said rod being of a length greater than the lengthof the tube, and the laterally-projecting lug arranged at the upper end of said rod, substantially as described.
JAMES 'BARBEE.
