To all whom it may concern- Be it known that I, JOHN S. HANSEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brockton, in the county of Plymouth and Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have in vented certain Improvements in Forms for Boots or Shoes, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like reference characters on the drawings indicating like parts in both figures.
This invention relates to forms for boots or shoes, and more particularly to forms which are adjustable in length to fit different sizes of boots or shoes.
The object of the invention is to provide an improved form of thisclass which is simple in construction and convenient in manipulation.
According to the present invention I provide a fore part and a heel part and an intermediate member pivotally connected to the fore part and novel means for adjustably connecting said member with the heel part. In the form shown the heel part is provided with a longitudinal groove in its upper face adjacent tothe fore part, and the intermediatemember is adjustably seated in said groove. A clamping device is mounted upon said heel art and is constructed to engage said mem er and hold it upon its seat in said groove. According to a convenient construction the clamping device comprises a lever arranged longitudinally of the heel part, fulcrumed at or near its rear end upon the upper'face of the heel part and bearingat its forward end upon the intermediate member. A vertical handle for manipulating the heel part is mounted upon said heel part and is arranged to hold the forward end of said lever in frictional engagement with said intermediate member.
Other features of the invention will be hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, which illustrate a displayform constituting one embodiment of the invention, Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of the form with parts shown in vertical section. Fig. 2 is a view in perspective of the.
more important portions of the form.
The form shown in the drawings comprises a fore part 2 and a heel part 4. An intermel diate connecting member 6 is pivotally secured at 8 to the fore part, said member being conveniently formed as a flat metallic bar. A longitudinal groove 10 is provided in the upper face of the form at its shank portion, said groove being approximately the same inwidth as the bar 6. The groove 10 is arranged centrally of the form and may conveniently be formed prior to dividing the form transversely to produce separate fore part and heel part. A wooden handle 16, having a threaded metallic stem 18, is mounted vertically upon the heel part, this handle being grasped by the o erator in manipulating the heel .part. clamping device, formed as a lever 20, is arranged longitudinally of the heel part, the rear end of said lever bearing upon the upper face of the heel part and the forward end of said lever engaging the intermediate member or bar 6. The lever 20 may conveniently be formed as a strip of metal having its rear part of the same general contour as the rear portion of the heel part and having its forward portion curved downwardly to bear upon the member 6. The lever 20 is provided with a perforation intermediate its ends, which is entered by the stem of the handle 16. As will appear from the drawings, the handle 16 is arranged to bear upon the upper face of said lever 20, so that by turning said handle the lever 20 may conveniently be forced into engagement with the member 6 or released therefrom. The upper face of the member 6 in Fig. 2 is shown as roughened at 22, as by a series of intersecting indentations. This expedient may be employed, if desired, to increase frictional resistance to movement of the lever 20 upon said member 6.
The rear end of the member 6 is provided with a slot 12, and a screw 14, passing through the slot and entering the heel part 4, limits movement of the heel part upon said member 6 and also retainsthe member 6 in the groove in said heel part when the clampinglever is loosened.
It will be seen that the member 6 is held upon its seat in the groove 10 in the-heel part by the clamping member 20. The clamping member 20 in the form shown is held from movement laterally of the form about the stem 18 by the walls of the groove 10, so that when the lever 20 is loosened there is no liability of its moving laterally from engagement with the member 6.
In the operation of the form shown the fore'part 2 is inserted in the shoe, the heel part being in a raised positionfor example, that shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1and being frictionally held upon the member 6. The lever may be adjusted upon said member 6 to make the form the proper length by manipulating the handle to release the clamping-lever 20. The heel part is forced into place in the shoe by means of the handle 16. It will be seen that the handle 16 con stitutes both a means whereby the heel part may be clamped or loosened upon the member 6 and a convenient device for manipulating said heel part. This is of advantage where it is desired to adjust said heel part in forcing it into place. The clamping device 20 constitutes a means whereby the heel part may be held upon the member 6 at any point within the limits of movement of the screw 14 in the slot 12. The heel part may be held frictionally upon the member 6 with any degree of firmness desired. For example, the heel part may be clamped upon said member so that. when the heel part is forced into place in the shoe it may yield in the direction of the fore' part in case the shoe is subjected to excessive strain. WVhen the form has been forced into place in the shoe, the heel part may, if desired, be rigidly held from movement on the member 6 by forcing said clamping-lever into rigid engagement with said member.
It will be seen that in removing the form from the shoe the handle 16 may be actuated to loosen the clamping-lever 20 and then by an upward pull upon said handle the form may be conveniently withdrawn.
As will be apparent from the drawings, the means for clamping the heel part upon the member 6 may be constructed to impart an ornamental appearance to the form. The
clamping device 20 may be nickeled, if desired, and is preferably symmetrically arranged upon the heel part and covers in part the upper face of the heel part, so that when theform is in place in a shoe the part exposed .to view is to a considerable extent a polished metallic surface. The clamping means shown is also of advantage in that its parts are arranged in an exposed position. Theyare therefore capable of being conveniently assembled and are also readily accessible in the use of the form.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
' 1. In a device of the class described, a fore part, a heel part having a longitudinal groove in its upper face adjacent to the fore part, an intermediate member pivotally secured to said fore part and arranged in said groove,
and a clamping device mounted upon. the heel part constructed to bearupon said member in said groove, and arranged to be held from lateral movement by the walls of said groove.
2. In a device of the class described, a fore part, a heel part having a longitudinal groove, an intermediate member pivotally secured to the fore part and arranged in said groove, a clamping device for holding the heel part in position upon said member arranged to clamp said member upon its seat in said. groove, and means for actuating said clamping device.
3. In a device of the class described, a fore part, a heel part, an intermediate member pivotally connected to said fore part, and means for holding said member in rigid engagement with said heel part, comprising a clamping-lever fulcrumed upon the heel part and arranged to engage said member, and. means for holding said lever in engagement with said member.
4. In a device of the class described, a fore part, a heel part, an intermediate member pivotally connected to said fore part and arranged longitudinally of the heel part, a clamping-lever fulcrumed upon the heel part and arranged to engage said member, and a handle for manipulating the heel part constructed to force said lever into frictional engagement With said member.
5. In a device of the class described, a fore part, a heel part, an intermediate member pivotally connected to the fore part and seated in the heel part, a clamping-lever arranged longitudinally of the heel part perforated intermediate its ends, and constructed to bear upon the heel part and the intermediate member upon opposite sides of said perf oration respectively, and a handle for manipulating the heel part movably mounted upon the heel part arranged in the perforation in said lever and constructed to hold said. lever in engagement with said member.
6. In a device of the class described, a fore part and a heel part, an intermediate member pivotally connected to said fore part and having mounted upon it said heel part, a clamping device arranged longitudinally of the heel part, fulcrumed upon the heel part and arranged to bear upon said member, and a'handle having a threaded stem mounted vertically in the heel part, and arranged in. engagement with said clamping device to hold it in frictional engagement with. said member. a
