To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANKG. MARBACH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Medina, in the county of Medina and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ratchet Tap and Nut Wrenches and I do declare kthat the following is a full, clear-,fand exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in ratchet-wrenches and other tools; and the invention consists in the construction and coinbination of parts, substantially as shown arid described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l shows a longitudinal elevation of wrench with the ends in section and the middle broken away, but in whole lines otherwise. Fig. 2 is a perspective view, partially in plan, of the ratchet-head in the top of thetool. Fig. 3 isy a bottom or lower' end view of the tool, and Fig. 4 a perspective view of the connecting member for the tool with the wrench proper. l? ig. 5 is a view of a modification of-the tool as a whole, and' Fig. 6 is a vertical section ol' Fig. .3 at right angles to Fig. 5.
In the device as thus shown, A represents the barrel of the tool, which is tubular or cylindrical and provided with a solid lower end having an angular and preferably square hole c through the same, by means of which engagement is made with the wrenchB by the intermediate part C. By my present construction a nut can be reached at any point however encumbered its surroundings may be, if the tool can be projected thereto. Of course in its broadest f sense I do not claim a tool having such capabilities to be wholly new.; but I am not'aware that the present construction as claimed herein has ever before been known or used. Referring now to the ratchet portion of the tool I show two separate and distinct members D and E, associated with the upper end of tube A. Thus the member` D is essentially the ratchet member, having a ratchethead cl, with right-angled channels 2 on its top and locked in main tube A b transverse' pin 3, which fixes said parts rigi( ly together. The said member D projects above or beyond the end of tube A and has a 'reduced portion or neck' 4 next beneath head d of suilicient depth to give sleeve or cap E longitudinal movement to effect engagement and disengagement of the ratchet mechanism. To ei'lect said engagen'ient, the cap E is provided with cross rod or bar 5 beneath its own'head 6, which is adapted to engage in either of the transverse channels 2 in ratchet-head d, according to its position and relation to said head, and engagement is made by pressing cap E inward and disengagement by drawing it outward, and a short set-screw 7 in the cap enters the annular channel or groove 4, forming the neck of member D, and limits the movements of` cap E in respect to said member.

In this case the handle H is not movable lengthwise, thou h it might be, and it takes the place of bot handle H and fixed cross -rod or bar 5 in Fig. l.
What I claim isl. In ratchet-tools, a barrel and a ratchethead at the upper end of said barrel, and a cap sleeved over said head and the end of the barrel and provided with a cross-piece internally adapted to engage said head. l
2. A ratchet-tool having a suitable barrel,
, a ratchet member fixed in said barrel and extending above the same, a cap slidably and and provided wit rotatably engaged with said ratchet member, a cross part in said cap adapted to engage said ratchet member and means. to rotate said parts fixed in said cap.
3. A ratchet-tool havin a body and ratchet mechanism connecte therewith, said mechanism comprising a ratchet-head having open slots at right an les across its top, a slidable sleeve on said bo y and means to engage said ratchet projecting through said sleeve.
4. A ratchet-tool having a body and a ratchet connected with the top thereof, a sleeve slidably en aged over the said ratchet a handle at its top and a device in said sleeve to engage said ratchet.
