Be it known that I, SAMUELS. HAND, a citizen ofthe United States, residing in the city and county of Camden, State YoivN ew Jersey, have inventeda new and useful' Improvement in Screw-Drivers and other Tools, which l" improvement isfully set `forth in the following specilication and accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to improvements in screw drivers and other tools, and consists of a tool formed of a combination of parts as hereinafter set forth.
Figurel represents a longitudinal section of a tool embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a perspective view of the parts thereof removed from the handle. Fig. 3 represents a section on line x, x, Fig. l. Fig. 4 representsa section on line y, y, Fig. 2. Fig. 5 represents a perspective view of the sleeve of the tool. line z, z, Fig. 5. Fig. 7 represents a view showing an interior view of the sleeve in [iat condition. Fig. 8 represents a side elevation of the tool when employed as a ratchet, the same being on a reduced scale.

Referring to the drawingsr--A designates a handle having therein a longitudinally extending bore B, and a transversely extending recess C. The inner end of said bore is threaded and has screwed thereto the bushing D, which has a central opening E, and is adapted to be engaged by a screw-driver through the bore B, so as to be moved in and out.
F- designates a spindle which enters the bore B and passes through the bushing D and is provided with an opening G near its end to receive a pin H,wherebythe stem and handle are secured together. On the forward end of the spindle F is loosely fitted the collar J, which hasY openings K, K, therein adapted to receive the right and left operating dogs L, L, the latter having guide pins M, M, on the sides thereof and springs N, N, bearing against said collar.

Secured to said spindle F is the tool socket Q which carries a ratchet R, adapted to be engaged by vthe dogs L, L.
A rotating sleeve S covers the ratchet and dogs, and has on its interior a cut-away portion forming a double inclined shoulder T, as shown in Figs. 5, 6 and 7, on which shoulder the pins M are adapted to rise so that either of the dogs may be thrown out of engagement with the ratchet and thus cause rotation of the tool to the right or left as may be required.
Wfhen it is desired to use the tool as an or Y dinary screw-driver, the sleeve is rotated so that the pins M of both dogs engage with the base of the shoulder T, see Fig. 6, whereby both dogs interlock with the ratchet R, and vthus the tool'socket and handle may be rotated as one, in either direction. When the sleeve is turned so that either incline of the shoulder engages the pin of one of the dogs, it holds down the same, whereby said dog is out of engagement with the ratchet, which may be rotated by the opposite dog. It' it is desired to use the tool in the reverse direction, the sleeve is accordingly turned, the dog heretofore ont, is forced into engagement with the ratchetfthe other dog being thrown out of gear, and rotation in the opposite direction is thus permitted, it being noticed that when the handle is rotated in reverse direction, the operating dog rides freely'over the ratchet and takes a fresh hold of the latter when the handle is again rotated in the forward direction.
The sleeve S is held in place by a ring S', which is Iitted on the inner end of the socket Q against said sleeve S, and is secured to said socket by a pin S2.
When the front end of the handle and contiguous parts. wear away, the bushing is screwed toward the recess C, by which means the parts are tightened again.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

A tool having its handle provided with a longitudinally-extending bore, and a transversely-extendiug recess at the end of said bore, said bore having an adjustable bushing at its inner end, and a spindle journaled in said bushing, and formed in its end with an opening, and a pin in said opening, said parts being combined substantially as and for the purpose set forth. A handle having a longitudinally-extending bore, and a tranversely-extending recess at the inner end of said bore, an adjustable bushing in said bore, a spindle journaled in said bushing, and having asecuring pin in said recess, a collar loosely mounted on said spindle and having openings therein, right and left dogs in said openings provided with operating springs, a lever mounted in the Walls of an opening in the side of said collar and adapted to be folded in a recess in the side of the handle, and a tool socket secured to said spindle and carrying a ratchet engaged by said dogs, said parts being combined substantially as described.
3. A tool handle having a longitudinallyextending bore and a transversely-extending recess at the end of said bore, a bushing engaging the inner end of said bore, a spindle journaled in said bushing, with an opening in its end, a pinin said opening, a loosely litting collar journaled on said spindle, said collar being provided with spring-actuated dogs and a pivoted lever adapted to rotate said collar, a tool socket secured to said spindie, said socket being provided with a ratchet engaged by said dogs, and a sleeve fitting over said ratchet and dogs, and provided with an attaching ring, said ring being provided with means for connecting the attaching ring to the socket, said parts being combined substantially as described.
