UNITED STATES PATENT FFIGE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
l atenteo. May 29, 1906.
Application filed May 17,1905. Serial No. 260.906.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN P. MERLINE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Oconto, in the county of Oconto and State of Wisconsin, have invented a new and Improved Holder, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to holders, it being particularly adapted for the support of paper bags.
Its principal objects are to provide a simple and convenient device of this character.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views. Figure 1 is aperspective view of one embodiment of my invention in place upon a suspended bar. Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the holder. Fig. 3 is a side elevation thereof, showing also its support and bags in place upon the carrier-bar; and Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the holder applied to another supporting member.
My improved holder is preferably formed integrally from a single piece of spring-wire. It comprises a supporting portion A, having alternate oppositely-extending members 10, forming a number of substantially parallel loops, these furnishing a lateral extension which presents a contact-surface of some extent and insures the stability of the device when it is in position. It may be hung-for example, as is illustrated in Fig. 1upon such a member as a suspended rod X, orit may be placed over the edge of a tray or receptacle Y. The center loop of this supporting portion is shown as turned outwardly at 11 to furnish an engaging portion, which may be readily grasped to apply or remove the device from the object upon which it is mounted or which may serveas a suspending means. The outer members 10 are extended toward one another at 12 and are then bent substantially at right angles, they overlapping at 13. From this point they project in planes substantially at right angles to the direction of lateral extension of the supporting portion to furnish diverging arms 14 and 15. At the lower extremity of the arm 14 is formed one or more spring convolutions 17, and beyond this is a substantially horizontal carrier-bar 18. At the outer end of the arm 15 is an engaging loop 19 to receive and support the adjacent extremity of the bar 18. This bar ceive the bags. The bar may be disengaged from the loop by pressing the arms somewhat toward one another and then swinging the bar upwardly, this being rendered easy by the yield at 17. The bags are now forced upon the bar and it is brought into cooperation with the loop to lock them in place. The device may now be applied to the member which is to receive it, the extension of the portion A preventing it from tilting thereon. In use the bags are drawn from the bar in the and when all have been used the device may be conveniently removed by means of its pro jection 11 and another supply placed upon it, as has been described. I
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A holder formed from a single piece of material and comprising a supporting portion having laterallyextending means for engaging a support, and a central upwardlyprojecting member adapted to be grasped to apply or remove the holder, and a carrier projecting from the supporting portion and having separated members.
2. A holder comprising a supporting por tion having laterally-extended means for engaging a support, a projecting member on said supporting portion adapted to be grasped to apply or remove the holder, carrier-arms diverging from the supporting portion, a carrier-bar movably mounted upon one of the arms, and an engaging device for the carrierbar mounted upon the other arm.
3. A holder comprising a series of alternate oppositely extending spring supporting members, carrier-arms projecting from the outer -manner customary in this class of holders,
members, and a carrier-bar connecting the arms.
4. A holder comprising a series of alternate oppositely-extend mg spring supporting members, carrier arms pro ecting from the outer IIO members, and a carrierb ar having spring connection with one arm and separable connection with the other.
5. A holder comprising a series of alternate oppositely-extending spring supporting members, a portion of said members extending outwardly from their comp anions to furnish an engaging portion, carrier-arms projecting from the outer members, and a carrier-bar connecting the arms.
6. A holder comprising a series of alternate oppositely-extending spring supporting members, overlapping carrier arms projecting from the outer members forced toward one another at the point of overlapping by the tension of the supporting members, and a carrier-bar connecting the arms.
