Description
WILLIAM. WARD, or CLEVELAND, oH-Lo.
Letters Patent No. 82,902, dated October 6, 1868.
IMPROVBD METALLIC ROOFING.
@Ligt Sittehult tefettth tu .in tigese tettttsttmt mit mating :gert nf tige stmt.
'IO- ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known thatl, WIL-LIAM WARD, of Cleveland, in county of Cuyahoga, and State of Ohio, have invented o certain new and Improved Metallic Roofing; and I do hereby declare that the following-is'affullnand coni i plete 'description of the seme, reference being had tor the-accompanying drawings, making a. part of this specification, in whichi Y i I A Figure 1 representen. section of :t roof with the tin sheets partly laid.
Figure 2 is aside view of the saine.
Figure 3 `is ar view of one of the sheets.
Figure 4 is a. view of the opposite side of the same.
Like letters of reference refer-to like parts in the several views.
The sheets are first cut in the form of an oblong square, indicotedvby the red line a', g. 3. At abshort distance from the end a. smallslit is cutat or about the point D, oneach side ofthe plate; below this thevmetal is then turned over, forming a. flange orlip, A, fig. 3. On the other side the metal is turned in the opposite direction, forming a lip, B',`on the opposite side of the sheet, the end of the sheet is then turnedup, forming a` lip, C, as shown at a,fig. 4, which is a side view of theshee't. .Thevportion, AD, of the pleite, at the sides oi'. which there 'are no anges, is then bent down, forming a return, es shown at 6,.,fig. 4. These plates are represented by gs. 3 and 4 ready for use. i i Y The 'mnner of applying these 'plates to the roof is as follows: A strip of metal, E, fig. 1, is secured to the outside edges of the roof projecting over lthe edges, as shown in iig. 2. -Commencing k:it the corner, the
first plate yis laid, the lips A and C fitting or lapping over theedges of the metal strip, which leaves `the ilzinge B and the piece D free for the application ofthe other plates one or more nails e cre'then driven through the purtD intothe roof, as shown et fig. 1. The next plate is then put on the lip o r flange A, .interlocking with the flange B, and the lange C fitting over the edge Aof the strip E, the part D being fastened by nails c, and soon, until the rstlayer of plates is secured to the rooi`. The next layer is put on ina. similar manner, the' angel'C fitting over the edge d of the part D', and the ange B interlocking with the flange A, the part D being secured by nails', which is .then covered by vthe next layer of plates. Thus the nails are completely covered. 2
What I claim :is my improvement, and desire to secure' by Letters Patent, is- The inetal'roofing, composed of sheets of metal cut andl bent, as shown in figs. 3 and 4, having H anges or lips turned thereon, as described, and used with strips D to forln the roof, all constrilcted and erlrztngedin'th'e manner and for the purpose 'as-described. WILLIAM WARD.
