Description

(No Model.)
LEENKLE.
ROOFING.
Patented June 7,1887.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LEONARD HENKLE, OF ROCHESTER, NEW YORK.
ROOFING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 364,253, dated June 7, 1887.
Application filed October 7, 1886. Serial No. 215,532. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, LEONARD HENKLE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Roch ester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Roofing; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the drawings accompany ing this application. v
My improvement relates to a roofing composed of squares of paper or other suitable material provided with binders by which the same may be connected, and otherwise constructed in the manner hereinafter described.
In the drawings, Figure l is a plan view of a portion of roofing showing my improvement. Fig. 2 is a plan of one of the squares or sections. Fig. 3 is an enlarged plan view showing one of the meeting corner-joints of the squares. Figs. 4. and 5 are cross-sections, respectively, in lines at a; and g/y of Figs. 1 and 2.
This roofing is composed of squares or sections 1 1,2 2,3 3, 850., laid up in coursesor tiers, like shingles, and capped at the top of the roof by saddle-boards in the usual way. The squares or sections are made of paper, tin, or any other suitable material, but preferably paper or paper-board of a hard and waterproof quality, as, when once laid, painted, tarred, or otherwise prepared, it isvery enduring.
13 B are binders, made of strips of tin or other sheet metal, bent at opposite edges to form hooks a b. Each square or section has two of these binders permanently attached to two contiguous edges, as shown in Fig. 2. The other two edges of the square are uir covered. To attach the binders, one hookedge is placed over the edge of the square and is then hammered downbya drop-press or other means. The binders are of somewhat less length than the sides of the square, so that the corners c c of the square are left free.
In applying the roofing one course, consisting of halfsquares, is laid at the lower edge of the roof, as shown at 1 l. A second course, 22, consisting of whole squares, is laid, and this is followed by succeeding courses'till the top of the roof is reached. In laying the squaresthe sides having the binders B B are placed uppermost, which brings the open hook-edges b b at the top and on the upper side to receive the blank edges of the next course above. lVhen the next course is laid, the blank edges of the squares are inserted in these open hooks, which may then be pounded down. This completesthe roofing, which may be painted, tarred, or otherwise prepared to resist the weather.
In laying the roof the squares are placed diagonally, which brings the binders all at a downward incline, to run off water. At the corner-joints are four thicknesses, as shown in the longitudinal section, Fig. 4. These are produced by the overlapping of the several blank corners c c of the squares, which, being free from the binders, can be brought close together and in thin compass. A tack or nail, f, is driven through three of these thicknesses before the covering-sheet is put on. The lower corner, c,of the upper section overlaps the other corners, c c, and forms the watershed.
By the means above described a simple and cheap roofing is produced which is very enduring.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A roofing composed of squares or sections provided with binders on two sides having hooked edges, the other sides being blank to fit into the hooks of the course previously laid, as set forth. p
2. A roofing composed of squares or sections provided on two sides with binders having hooked edges, the other sides being blank,
said binders being shorter than the edges of the sections, leaving blank corners which overlap at the corner-joints, 'as and for the purpose specified.
3. A roofing square or section having bind ers permanently attached on two edges, the other two edges being blank, said binders being shorter than the edges of the square, so as to leave blank corners between them as set forth.
In witness whereof I have hereunto signed my name in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
LEONARD HENKL'E.
