UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ISABELLA VREELAND, OF PATERSON, NEW JERSEY, ADMINISTRATRIX OF ANTHONY W. OBLENUS, DECEASED.
COMBINED COT AND CRIB.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed April 23, 1904. Serial No. 204.504.
Patented Au 7,1906.
To all whont it may concern:
Be it known that I, ISABELLA VREELAND, of Paterson, Passaic county, New Jersey, am the administratrix of the estate of ANTHONY W. OBLENUs,'late of River Edge, Bergen county, New Jersey, who did invent certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Cot and Crib, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to a combined cot and crib having among its objects convenience and durability.
Another object is to provide a folding combined cot and crib which may be readily con verted into a cot or into a crib, as desired,
the parts being adapted to fold together when the device is to be stored or transported.
The invention consists of certain novel fea- 2o tures and combination of parts to be hereinafter described and then claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, which show a suitable form of combined cot and crib of which, for example, the invention is susceptible, Figure. 1 is a front view of the improved combined cot and crib. Fig. 2 is an end view thereof. In both of these figures the rockers are shown as out of use. Fig. 3 is an end elevation of the folded device.
0 Fig. 4 is a detail view showing how the canopy is secured to one side of the cot-frame, and Fig. 5 is a detail view of parts of the frame.
' The cot-frame comprises a rod a, at one end of which are pivoted two crossed bars, legs, or supports 1) c and at the other end two similar crossed bars at e. The upper ends of the legs I) d are connected by a side barf and the upper ends of the legs 0 e by a side barf, par- 40 allel with the side barf, the said side bar, be-
ing connected by a web 9, of suitable fabric, forming a bottom. At opposite sides of preferably the mid-length of the rod a are sockets g 9 in which may be inserted the lower ends of braces h h, the upper ends of which support the middle portions of the side bars ff. The described parts constitute a cot.
Pivotally mounted at t on the lower ends of two opposite legsas, for instance, the
legs I) d-are rockers j 3', such pivotal connection being near one end of each rocker. In such case the other legs 0 e are provided at their lower ends with abutments or stops, such as ir, with which the inner edges of the free ends of the rockers are engaged when the device is employed as a crib and against which they are held by suitable means, preferably by a rope or cord Z, one end of which is secured to an eye m on one of the rockers, as 3', while the other end passes through eyes Z Z on the legs d b and through an eye m on the other rocker. The free end of the cord or rope may be secured to a hook or eye m on leg I). When the rope or cord is trained, as stated, drawn taut, and tied fast, the rockers may beheld firmly against the stops and the cot becomes a crib. A stay-rope n connects one of the legs, as d, with its crossed leg, as e, the stayrope being connected'to eyes, such as t and u, in the respective legs.
The cot or crib is provided, preferably, with a canopy which comprises a rectangular frame 0,. connected at one edge by hinges 0 with the side barf, together with another similar frame p, connected at one edge with the other edge of the frame 0 by means of links p. The frames 0 p are of substantially the same size and are covered suitably, as with mosquito-netting g, and the free edge of frame 19 is provided with clips or fastenng devices 1*, which snap over the side bar f, whereby the frames 0 p are held in inverted- V shape. The outer longitudinal bars of the frames 0 p are preferably beveled ofi, as indicated.
The rockers are moved above the stops or abutments 7c when they are out of use. When the parts of the combined cot and crib are folded up, as shown in Fig. 3, they may be tied together by means of the rope or cord Z.
The invention is susceptible of various apparent modifications which are within the spirit and scope of the invention; but it is clear that some features may be used without others.
Therefore what I claim as new is 1. A folding cot or crib comprising a flexible bottom, a frame for such bottom supported by cross-bars suitably pivoted to a central cross-bar, and side-bar-reinforcin braces suitably mounted upon the centra cross-bar and adapted to support the frame.
2. A folding cot or crib comprising a flexible bottom and a frame supported by braces suitably pivoted to a central cross-bar and reinforcing-braces adapted to enter suitable recesses in the frame and the cross-bar, suitable eyes or guides on the supporting parts and a cord or rope led through the eyes or guides to secure the parts in position.
3. A combined cot and crib, comprising suitably-connected legs forming a frame and provided with a bottom, abutments or stops at the sides of some of said legs, rockers each pivoted at one end to one of the remainder of said legs, and a cord or rope, said frame being provided with eyes or guides, and said cord or rope being connected with the rockers and led through said eyes, for substantially the purpose set forth.
4. A combined cot and crib, comprising a folding frame, consisting of a pivot-rod, crossed legs pivoted to each end of the rod, and front and rear side bars connecting the upper ends of the legs, a bottom applied to the side bars, reinforcing-braces adapted to enter recesses in the pivot-rod and side bars and a folding canopy consisting of covered and movably connected front and back frames, one of said canopy -frames being hinged to one side bar, and the other being provided with fastening means for engaging the other side bar, substantially as described.
5. A combined cot and crib, comprising a folding frame, consisting of a pivot-rod, crossed legs pivoted to each end of the rod, and front and rear side bars connecting the upper ends of the legs, a bottom applied to the side bars, reinforcing-braces adapted to enter recesses in the pivotrod and side bars, abutments or stops at the sides of the front legs, rockers each pivoted at the rear end to one of the other of said legs, and means for holding the other ends of the rockers in firm contact with said abutments or stops, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.

OBlenus, deceased.
