' METALLIC RAILWAY-TIE.
i Specification of'Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 27, 1906.
Application flied september 23,1905. serial No. 279,805.
To all. whom/t may concern: Be it known that I, OswALD S. PULLIAM, a
citizenof the United States, residing at Pittsburg,in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Metallic Railway-Ties, of which the following is specification.
'The object of my inventionis to provide a vnew andy improved metallic railway-tie; and
to this end the present invention consists of a metallic railway-tie, in the construction and-in the combination of parts all as hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings,1 which illustrate applications of my invention, Figure 1 is a perspe'ctiveview of several ties constructed in accordance with my invention applied,to two rails ;"Fig. 2, a broken View of a modified'form of tie in side elevation; Fig. 3, a view similar to Fig. 2, showing a different arrangement of slots in the web; and Fig. "4, aA detail vertical sectional view.
Referringl to the drawings, A and B represent two railsv of the usual form.
' My invention comprises a beam having a top member' 1 ab'ottom, vmember 2, and a vertical web 3.,'and, as illustrated and as preferredthe tie is constructed of a rolled or cast structural beam in the form of an I- beam. In the forms of ties shownu by the ldrawings Iemploy two sets of engaging lugs of securin the rails yto the tics.
4, whichare adapted to be bent over to en-y gage the rail-bases.l These lugs, as shown,
are. formed integral with the top member 1; but I-donotdesire to be limited to this mode 'The vertical web 3 is formed at each end in the form -offFig 1 with a slot 6 and 'in the 45..
lform of Fig. 2 with a plurality of similar, slots. These slots extend inwardlyfrom tlie 'ends of the tie for a sufficient distance to give the re# quiredr amount of spring to the ties as the load isA passing-over.
1. A metallic railway-tie comprising a cast structural beam having a vertical web and top and bottom members, and means for giv- Formed in# ing elasticity to the tie comprising a slot formed in the web, substantially as set forth.
2. A metallic railway tie vcomprising a beam having a vertical web and means for giving elasticity to the tie 'comprising top and bottom members, and a horizontaliydisposedslot formed in the web, substantially as set forth.
A metallicl railwaytie comprisingy a rolled structural beam having a vertical web and top and bottom members, and means for giving elasticity to the tie comprising a slot formed .in the web at each end of the beam, substantially as set forth..
4. A metallic railway-tie comprising a beam having a vertical web and top and bottom members, and means for giving elasticity to the tie comprising a plurality of slots formed in the web, substantially as set forth.
5. A metallic railway-tie comprising a rolled structural I-beam having means for giving elasticity to the tie comprising a hori zontally-disposed slot formed .in the web thereof, substantially as set forth.
6. A metallic railway-tie comprising a rolled structural I-beam having means for giving elasticity to the tie comprising a horizontally-disposed slot formed in the web at each 4end ofthe beam, substantially as` setl forth.
' 7. A metallic railway-tie comprising a rolled structural I-beam having means for giving elasticity to the tie comprising a plurality of horizontallydisposed slots formed in the web of the beam, substantially as set forth. j
8. A metallic railway-tie comprising a beam having a vertical web and top and bottom members, means for giving elasticity to the tie comprising)horizontally-disposed slots formed in the web, and outwardly-extending projections formed integral with the web,
substantially as set forth.
9. A metallic railwaytie comprising a beam having a vertical web and top and bottom members, engaging lugs formed intefrral with the top member, means for giving elasticity to the tie comprising horizontally-disposed slots formed in the web, and. outwardly-extending projections formed integral with the web, substantially as setl forth.'l
l0. A metallic railway-tie 'comprising an I-beam having horizontally-disposed slots lOO IOC
formed in its web for giving elasticity to kthe l tie, engaging lugs formed integral With its top member, and outwardly-extending projections formed integral With the web, substan- I tially as set forth.
11. A metallic railway-tie comprising en -beam having a horizontally-disposed slot formed in its Web at each end of the beam for giving elasticity to the tie, engaging .lugs
outwardly-extending projections formed 1nte ral with the Web, substantially'as set forth.
n testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
