To aZZ whom it may concern Be it known that I, BunNs D. LooKwooD, a citizen of the United States, residing at N0. 366 Lincoln avenue, Bellevue, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Railway-Ties, of which the following is a specification.
An object of the invention is to provide a metal tie which is of simple, light and strong construction adapted to withstand the vibration and heavy loads to which it is subjected in use.
Another object of the invention is to pro vide a tie, the main portion of which may be pressed from a single sheet of metal or made from a single section of rolled metal.
Another object of the invention is to provide means for bracing the tie against deformation when heavy loads are applied thereto.
Another object of the invention is to provide means for fastening railroad rails to ties, which means are of simple and economical construction having a minimum number of parts which may be easily and quickly. removed or replaced.
A further object of the invention is to provide a fastener for rails and ties which comprises a plurality of operatively connected parts having inclined surfaces which co operate to cause such parts to move into close contact with the rail and tie.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a fastener for railroad rails by which the gage of the track rails may be adjusted.
Referring now to the drawings in which like reference characters refer to like parts, Figure 1 is a plan *iew of a tie and rail fastening constructed in accordance with the invention, Fig. 2 is a side elevational view of the same, Fig. 3 is an enlarged sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1; Figs. at and 5 are enlarged sectional views taken on the lines f t and 55 respectively of Fig; 1, Fig. 6 is an enlarged detail view of the underside of one of the fastening members, and Fig. 7 is an enlarged sectional view illustrating a modification of the rail fastening means.
Referring now in detail to the drawings, 1 indicates the tie which is preferably of inverted U or channel form in cross section having a web or top portion 2 and outwardly and downwardly inclined flanges or side portions The lower portions 4: of these walls 3 are bent outwardly to form a wide supporting base on the road bed for the tie. Near the end portions of the tie, plates 5 are provided which are preferably secured to the portions 1- of the flanges 3, and are adapted to prevent undue spreading of such flanges and to strengthen the tie as a whole. These plates are bent in such a manner that when secured as just described they extend upwardly between the walls and add a certain degree of resiliency to the The side edge portions of these plates 5 are provided with lips 5 against which the lower edges of the portions 4: of the flanges 3 are adapted to abut, thus assistin the securing means to withstand the shearing stresses to which they may be subjected.
6 indicates the track rails which rest on the tie and are secured thereto by clamps or fasteners 7. Each of the fasteners 7 comprises parts 9 and 10 which are operatively connected by a bolt 11, which-at its lower end is provided with a head 12 and at its upper end with a nut 13. The part 9 is provided with a lug 14twhich is adapted to engage the upper surface of the flange 15 of the rail, and is also provided with 'a portion 16, part of which extends downwardly thr ugh an opening 17 in the web 2 of the tie and is formed with an inclined surface 18. The part 10 is provided with portions 19 which are adapted to engage the undersurface of the web 2 of the tie, and also with a portion 20, part of which extends upwardly through the opening 17, and is formed with an inclined surface 21 which is adapted to coiiperate with the surface 18 of the part 9 when the nut 13 is turned down.
When the nut 13 is screwed down the inclined surfaces 18 and 21 of the parts 9 and 10 respectively, are forced into close contact, which surfaces, due to the portion 16 of the part 9 abutting against the edge of the web forming the opening 17, will cooperate to force the part 10 in a direction longitudinally of the tie until the portion 20 abuts against the edge 22 of the flange 15 of the rail, at which time the lug 1d of the part 9 is in close contact with the upper surface of the flange 15 and the portions 19 of the part 10 are in close contact with the undersurface of the web 2 of the tie, thus clamping the rail firmly to the tie.
The lower side of the part 10 is provided with a vertically depending portion 23 which is adapted to engage the head 12 of the bolt 11, and prevent such bolt from turning when the nut 13 is being turned. This portion 23 is provided with a horizontal lug 2%, which extends over the head 12 of the bolt, and is adapted to prevent accidental separation of the bolt and the part 10 when the fasteners are being applied to the tie and rail, or when they are being removed from such parts. Between the nut 13 and the part 9 a split washer 25 or other suitable means may be provided for holding the nut against accidental turning.
If at any time it is desired to adjust the gage of the track rails, the fastening means at one side of one or both rails may be loosened and the fastening means at the other side of the rail may be tightened until the rail has been moved to the position desired, at which time the first mentioned fastener is again tightened, thus clamping the rail in its preferred adjusted position. In the drawings only a slight clearance between the bolt and the parts 9 and 10 has been shown to permit adjustment of the gage of the track rail, but it is to be understood that if desired this clearance may be made greater to permit a greater degree of adjustment.
In the modification as illustrated in Fig. 7, the cooperating inclined surfaces of the parts 9 and 10 are provided with teeth or serrations, which, when the nut 13 is turned down, are adapted to engage and assist in holding the parts against accidental separation.
Claims:
1. A tie comprising a member of channel form in cross section having a horizontal web and downwardly depending flanges, a plate at each end of said tie extending upwardly between and secured to said flanges, a rail carried by said tie, and a clamp for adjustably securing said rail to said tie, said clamp comprising a plurality of cooperating parts having cooperating inclined faces, and a substantially vertically disposed bolt operatively connecting said parts.
2. A tie comprising a member of hollow form and a. plate at each end of said tie extending upwardly within and secured to said member, a rail carried by said tie, and a clamp for adjustably securing said rail to said tie,-said clamp comprising a-plurality of cooperating parts having cooperating inclined faces and a substantially vertically disposed bolt operatively connecting said parts.
3. A tie comprising a member having a horizontal web and downwardly inclined crating parts having cooperating inclined faces and a substantially vertically disposed bolt operatively connecting said parts.

A tie comprising a member having a web and downwardly inclined flanges and a plate arched upwardly between and secured to said flanges, a rail carried by said tie, and a clamp for adjustably securing said rail to said tie, said clamp comprising a plurality of cooperating parts having cooperating inclined faces and a substantially vertically disposed bolt operatively connecting said parts.
5. A tie, a rail carried by said tie, and independent clamp members on each side of said rail for adjustably fastening said rail to said tie, each of said clamp members comprising a plurality of parts having cooperating inclined surfaces and a bolt operatively connecting said parts. 7

A tie, a rail carried by said tie, clamp members for adjustably fastening said rail to said tie, each of said clamp members comprising a plurality of parts having cooperating inclined faces, a bolt operatively connecting said parts, and means on one of said parts adapted to engage the head of said bolt.
10. A tie, a rail carried by said tie, clamp members for adjustably fastening said rail to said tie, each of said members comprising a plurality of parts having cooperating inclined faces and a bolt operatively connecting said parts.
11. A tie, a rail carried by said tie, clamp members for adjustably fastening said rail to said tie, each of said members comprising a plurality of parts having inclined cooperating surfaces, and a bolt operatively connecting said parts.
12. A tie, a rail carried by said tie, independent clamp members on each side of said rail for adjustably fastening said rail to said tie, each of said members comprising a plurality of parts having cooperating inclined faces, and a bolt operatively connecting said arts. p 13.
