Specification of Letters Patent.

Be it known that I, JOHN MOLONEY, farmer, a subject of the King of Great Britain and Ireland, and a resident of Millers Forest, county of N orthumberland, State of New South Wales, Commonwealth of Australia, have invented a certain new and useful Improved Tobacco-Pipe, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has been devised with a view to intercept the nicotin and essential oil of tobacco and prevent it from entering the mouth of the smoker. The bowl is bored in the usual way. At the bottom of the bowl a passage is bored at right angles into a chamber which is bored vertically from the top of the bowl. At the bottom of the vertical chamber is a small depression, in which the essential oils from the tobacco can accumulate. This Viscid material can be removed through a hole that is bored horizontally from the back of the bowl, and this hole is closed by a screw-plug. The vertical chamber above mentioned is closed at the top by a screw-plug which tapers toward the bottom of the chamber. This plug is hollow through a part of its length and is closed at the bottom by a plug of any suitable material which may be removed. The sides of the taper plug are bored with small holes, through which the smoke can pass. Into the upper part of the vertical chamber the tubular bore in the stem will open. The smoke will therefore pass round the taper plug in the vertical chamber, through the holes in the taper part, through larger bored holes in the top of the taper part into the tubular bore in the stem, and from thence to the mouth of the smoker. The two screw-plugs are preferably provided with milled heads, so that they can be readily unscrewed.
The accompanying drawing shows a longitudinal section of the pipe.
A is the bowl, B the little horizontal passage leading from the bowl to a vertical passage C. The bottom of the passage O is formed into a depression 0, in which the vis cid essential oils from the tobacco in the bowl may accumulate. A horizontal passage D leads from the bottom of the vertical chamber 0 to the exterior of the bowl at the rear and is closed by a screw-plug E, provided with a milled head 6, whereby it may be easily unscrewed and the viscid matter in the depression 0 be removed. The top of the vertical chamber O is closed by a screw-plug F, provided with a milled head f, whereby it may be readily unscrewed. The lower part F of the plug F is made hollow and taper, its bottom end being closed by a small removable plug 9 of any suitable material. The sides of the part F are bored with small holes G, through which the smoke can enter the plug from the vertical chamber C. The top holes in the taper plug F are of larger diameter than the small holes below and are in line with the tubular bore in the stem H. The taper plug F F acts as a se arator. The smoke will pass from the bow through the passage B into the vertical chamber C, thence through the holes G into the taper part F of the separator-plug, thence through the larger holes at the top of the taper plug F into the bore in the stem H. The direction that the smoke will take is indicated by the arrow.
The several bores and plugs are somewhat exaggerated in size in order that their construction and functions may be more clearly apprehended.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A pipe having a vertical chamber parallel with the bowl of the pipe, a hollow tapered separator-plug closing said chamber at the top, said plug having holes therein, some of said holes being in line with the bore in the stem of the pipe, said chamber having a small depression at its bottom, a passage leading from the bowl to the chamber, a passage in line with the first-mentioned passage, connecting the chamber with the exterior of the pipe and a plug closing said last-named passage.
