To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, BERTHA ORTELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New J ersey, have invented an Improvement in Garment-Supporters, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to a garment-supporter and regulator; and the object thereof is to effectually support the hose and at the same time to maintain the skirts or other undergarments at the waistbands and also the shirt-waist, if desired, in a fixed position in determining the location of the waist-line to produce a straight-front effect.

In carrying out my invention I employ diverging straps extending below the lower edge of the corset and provided at their ends with fasteners to which the hose may be connected. I provide devices to which the said straps are secured, in which said straps are adjustable and by which the supporter is attached and secured to the corset, corsetwaist, or similar garment. I also employ means for securing the skirts or other undergarments in position and the waist in the desired place, and while these devices hold the skirts and waist down these garments by their tendency to work up in a large measure support the hose, and consequently the hose are thus largely maintained in place.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is an elevation of my improved garment-supporter and the lower front portion of a corset to which the same is secured. Fig. 2 is a partial section and side elevation of the supporter shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an elevation of a modification of my invention. Fig. 4 is a partial section and side elevation of the same, and Fig. 5 is a cross-section of the clasp or fastener. Fig. 6 is a front elevation of a further modification of my invention.

Referring now to Figs. 1 and 2, I preferably employ an adjusting-strap a, of strong non-elastic material, and two metallic plates 1) c or other devices having elongated slots. The strap a is passed through the elongated slot in the plate I), returned, and brought through the similar slot in the plate 0, then upward, terminating in an extension at, the function of which will be hereinafter described. d, e, and f are straps of material like the strap a, and the strap (1 is passed through the elongated slot in plate 6 beneath the strap a, and the end of the strap (Z is returned upon itself and sewed together, thus securing the strap to the plate I), as shown at 2, Fig. 2. The straps e f are preferably one piece of material doubled at the center and at the fold sewed or otherwise secured together and to the strap a, where the same passes through the elongated slot in plate 0, as indicated at 8, Fig. 2, thus securing in position at the plate 0 the straps a, e, and f. It will now be apparent that the strap a is slidably adjustable in the elongated slot in the plate I), so that within reasonable limits the plates 1) c may be placed any desired distance apart. Each plate I) c is provided with a slot, which is preferably at right angles to the elongated strap slot and is adapted to receive one of the studs 4 of the corset-steel it. Each strap a (Z 6 f is provided with a clasp i, such as shown on the straps d e f, in which the strap may be adjusted to determine its length, and the portion 6 of each strap, Fig. 5, below the clasp t is preferably elastic material and provided with a fastener, such as 10, to which the hose may be secured, the straps a 6 going to the hose on the right limb and the straps d fto the hose on the left.

In the employment of my improved hosesupporter the plate 0 is secured to the lowermost stud of the corset-steel and the plate I) to the next stud above, the plates being re versed in position, and then the strap a is pulled through the elongated slot in the plate I) to the position shown in Fig. 2, when the parts are in a fixed position secured to the corset, and the straps may be adjusted at the clasps 'i to the necessary lengths.

The extension a of the strap a, is preferably doubled over at the end to obtain a greater body, and in conjunction with the extension a I employ pin-hooks Z or other means for holding the skirts or other undergarments down and the shirt-waist in place in any desired position, and one point of each of the pin-hooks Z is preferably longer than. the other, so that both points of the hooks are not forced through the material at the same time, thereby lessening the labor of getting the pins into place. As the pin-hooks Z may be inserted at any point in the extensionstrap a, it will be manifest that the garments held by the hooks maybe so placed as to bring the apparent waist-line to any desired posi. tion, and, moreover, said garments by their tendency to pull up tend in a large measure to support the hose.

As shown in Figs. 3 and 4, illustrating a modification of my invention, I may dispense with the straps e and in which instance the adjustable strap a is passed first through the elongated slotin the plate I), down, and folded through the elongated slot in the plate 0 and terminates in an extension-strap a, as before, the parts of the strap being sewed together at the plate 0, connecting the plate 0 and parts of the strap a and extension a, as at 5, Fig. 4, the pin-hooks being used in the extension, as hereinbefore described. A strap (Z, corresponding to the strap d, is secured at its end in the elongated slot in plate I), and both straps a and d are provided with clasps i, below which there are two pieces of elastic material each provided with fasteners 10, to which the hose are secured. justment the modification is similar to the preferred construction, and with either construction the straight-front effect is obtained, even in corsets which have lost their form, for then the straps a (Z or a d may be overlapped beneath the lower stud, tending to in crease the pull and force the abdomen in.

It will be understood that my invention may be used with the well-known Ferris waists and bust-forms and other garments which have no steels by securing to such garments the necessary studs in any convenient manner and in any desired position.

It will be readily understood that when the pressure on the lower front edge of the corset is excessive, due to the strain on the straps, a depression is very liable to be made, tending to produce a bulging or buckling effect on either side of said strap, and to overcome this difficulty I prefer to employ, as shown in Fig. 6, a shield m of suitable material, usually fabric, and preferably of approximately triangular shape. The shield m preferably extends from the slotted plate 0 to the lower edge of the corset, and portions of the straps a f are sewed or otherwise secured thereto, and the lower portion of the shield may be divided, as shown. The shield m is provided with straps 71, extending from the lower portion and secured to the outer edges thereof, and these straps n are adapted to be passed around the waist, over the corset, and secured in any desired manner in order to produce lateral strain to obviate the bulging effect on either side of the straps at the lower edge of the corset when the pressure thereon is excessive.

I claim as my invention 1. As a new article of manufacture, a garment supporter comprising devices each adapted to receive the stud of a corset-steel, a strap secured to one of said devices and a strap secured to the other of said devices,

In use and adthe last-aforesaid strap passing adjustably through the first-aforesaid device.

2. As a new article of manufacture, a garment-supporter, comprising diverging straps, a device to which one of said straps is connected, a device to which the other strap is connected with the last-aforesaid strap passing ad justably through the first-aforesaid device, an extension integral with one of said straps, and means connected therewith for engaging the skirts or other garments to hold the same down and thereby secure the waistline in position.

3. As a new article of manufacture, a garmentsupporter, comprising plates each having a slot therein adapted to receive the stud of a corset-steel, a strap secured to one of said plates, and a strap secured to the other of said plates, the last-aforesaid strap passing adjustably through the first-aforesaid plate.

4. As a new article of manufacture, a gar-' ment-supporter, comprising plates each having a slot therein adapted to receive the stud of a corset-steel, a strap secured to one of said plates, a strap secured to the other of said plates with the last-aforesaid strap passing adjustably through the first aforesaid plate, an extension integral with one of said straps, and means connected therewith for engaging the shirts or other garments to hold the same down and thereby secure the waistline in position.

5. As a new article of manufacture, a garmentsupporter, comprising two plates each having a slot adapted to receive the stud of a corset-steel, and an elongated slot at right angles to the aforesaid slot, a strap secured in the elongated slot of one plate and an adjustable strap passing through the last-aforesaid elongated slot, through the elongated slot in the other plate and secured therein and extending beyond the said slot.

6. As a new article of manufacture, a garment-supporter, comprising plates each having a slot therein adapted to receive the stud of a corset-steel, a strap secured in one of said plates, a strap secured in the other of said plates, the last-aforesaid strap passing adjustably through the first-aforesaid plate, other straps connected to the strap secured in the other of said plates at or about the point in which it is secured, a shield secured to said other straps, and straps connected to said'shield and adapted to pass aroundthe waist of the wearer.

7. As a new article of manufacture, a garment-supporter, comprising two plates each having a slot adapted to receive the stud of a corset-steel, and an elongated slot at right angles to the aforesaid slot, a strap secured in the elongated slot in one plate and an adjustable strap passing through the last-aforesaid elongated slot, through the elongated slot in the other plate and secured therein and shield and adapted to pass around the Waist extending beyond said slot, other straps seof the wearer. 10 cured to the last-aforesaid strap just above Signed by me this 30th day of October, Where the same passes through the slot in the 1903.
